Display
Now with the Epic 4G Touch packing a Super AMOLED Plus (800 x 480) screen resolution it allows the screen for deeper blacks, superior viewing angles and best of all the games really pop off the screen. Sure other Android devices use the qHD (960 x 540) display and some people may feel that the Epic 4G Touch display might seem inferior but when taken outside and subjected to direct sunlight you are still very clearly able to see the screen without losing intensity.
When viewing movies the screen comes alive. The colors seem to dance along the screen and really bring you into the picture much better. Photos are richer and deeper in color. Oh and yes the Epic 4G Touch does come with an indicator light as well.

Overall, the battery life is very good. If you are the type of person to use your phone occasionally, you will see a great battery life. Of course, if you start using games and watch HD videos, the battery will deplete much faster. The bigger battery helps with battery life however the 4G WiMax and bigger screen might be a bit more taxing on the battery usage.

There was no easy way to remove them except by pain-stakingly going through each one and deleting them one by one! Needless to say, many people gave up a long time ago, and just learned to live with it… Facebook has finally listened and you can now hide all your Facebook Recent Activity EASILY from your wall using a new privacy feature. Here’s how to do it…

How To Hide All Your Recent Activity:

After Login in to your Facebook Account, click on “Profile” to go to your Wall.
Hover your mouse cursor (that means make your mouse arrow float) over the top-right-hand corner of the activity you wish to hide until a blue box with X on it appears.
Click the X and you will see the new option to “Hide all…” Click it and all recent activity of that type (comments or likes or friends or questions, etc) will be hidden for as long as you wish.

If Facebook loads more content then continue scrolling all the way down until you see the menu bar at the bottom of the page with the options named “Older Posts” and “Edit Options”. Click “Edit Options“ and unhide any activity by clicking the “X” removal button next to it, as shown below. Apple adds Thunderbolt, faster processors to iMac line
Apple introduced updated iMacs Tuesday morning, complete with Thunderbolt compatibility and FaceTime HD, just as expected. The iMacs come in 21.5″ and 27″ models and run Intel quad-core i5 and i7 processors with AMD Radeon HD graphics.

The base model is a 21.5″ iMac that starts with a 2.5GHz i5, Radeon HD 6750M graphics card, and 500GB hard drive for $1,199, while the highest end model goes up to a 27″ screen, 3.1GHz i5, Radeon HD 6970M, and 1TB hard drive for $1,999. Users can also get a custom configuration with a 3.4GHz i7 processor, up to a 2TB hard drive, or a 256GB solid state drive. And, as mentioned earlier, all the iMac models now come with the high-speed Thunderbolt I/O port and a new and improved FaceTime HD camera (which looks the same as the previous iSight camera, but offers 720p resolution with better low-light performance).
Apple and Intel first introduced Thunderbolt in February with Apple’s introduction of updated MacBook Pros. The new port is designed to bring much faster I/O throughput to mobile devices and serve as a next-generation connector for peripherals (displays, storage, video and audio devices). Thunderbolt can support 10Gbps bidirectional communication—20 times faster than the theoretical limit of USB 2.0 and 12 times faster than Firewire 800.

As for looks, the new iMacs appear to have the same aesthetics as the previous models, so if you were hoping for yet another makeover, you’ll have to keep waiting. Apple hopes, however, that the machine’s performance gains—up to 70 percent faster, Apple says—will speak for themselves. Will you be buying?

Update: It looks like the new 27″ iMac comes with two Thunderbolt ports, allowing for the connection of two external monitors simultaneously. (Apple confirmed this with several members of the press this morning.)

Thunderbolt iMac Includes Replaceable GPU:
With Apple’s new Thunderbolt-equipped iMac available for less than a day, the iFixit team has already stripped the computer down to its frame. Inside they found Intel’s quad-core Core i5 processor, along with a removable graphics processor board.

“With a bit of magic, the GPU heat sink detaches from the logic board, exposing the AMD GPU board,” iFixit’s Miroslav Djuric said. “You heard that right, folks — you don’t have to replace the entire logic board if your GPU explodes from too much l33t gaming.”

Replacing the GPU, however, comes at a cost since digging that deep into an iMac will void the warranty.

Apple refreshes iMacs with faster CPUs, Thunderbolt ports:
Apple updated its iMac all-in-one desktops today, adding Intel’s second-generation quad-core Core i5 and Core i7 CPUs and Thunderbolt data ports.

The new models are already available for purchase from Apple’s Web site and its retail stores, with prices ranging from $1,199 for the 21.5-inch iMac to $1,999 for the 27-inch model.

Along with the updated CPUs and the new high-speed data port, the new iMacs sport faster Advanced Micro Devices’ graphics processors than their predecessors and integrated FaceTime HD video cameras. Otherwise, little else about the iMac has changed from the previous models that debuted in June 2010. (That includes external design; the 2011 and 2010 models look all but identical.)

The upgrades are in keeping with the rumors that appeared on CNET and elsewhere over the past few months. They also match updates Apple made to the MacBook Pro line earlier this year.

Intel’s second-generation Core CPUs, formerly known by the code name Sandy Bridge, bring increased power efficiency over Intel’s previous generation of Core CPUs, along with faster performance, particularly from its built-in graphics processing capabilities. While the initial batch of Sandy Bridge-supporting motherboards were recalled due to a flaw in one of the storage processing chips, Intel has since rectified the issue and has resumed shipping.

iPhone 5 Preview : What to Expect From the iPhone 5

What new features and innovations will Apple roll out in the next iteration of the iPhone? A patent application here, a parts order there … this week on Upgrade Your Life, Yahoo! News’ Becky Worley puts together the clues plus some educated guesses, to bring us a preview of Apple’s iPhone 5!

What will it look like?
Last year’s model, the iPhone 4, had a glass backplate that could get scratched. It’s possible that the iPhone 5 will have a brushed metal backplate, which would help keep it from scratching and make the phone lighter as well. There have been some recent rumors that the phone could get considerably thinner, even tapering toward the bottom. The square edges could round out, making it look a little more like an iPod touch.
Besides that, we’ve heard that Steve Jobs isn’t a fan of physical buttons; the iPhone 4 only has one, on its front. The iPhone 5 might turn that one physical home button into a virtual, on-screen home button, which would get out of the way while you’re watching videos. This would give it a four-inch screen, half an inch bigger than the iPhone 4′s. But another rumor has the display bumping up to only a 3.7-inch screen, and the home button getting slightly larger.Remember, none of this info is coming from Apple. It’s all rumor, speculation and guessing, so take it with a grain of salt.
What performance upgrades will it have?
It’ll have a faster, probably dual-core processor, plus more memory and an improved camera — one that might be able to take 8 megapixel still pictures and record 1080p HD video. You’ll be able to play more realistic games, switch between open apps more quickly, and keep more web pages open at once.Beyond that, you can bet that Apple doesn’t want a repeat of “Antennagate,” and will be paying special attention to the iPhone 5′s antenna to make sure there are fewer connection issues.

Will it have any new features?
We already know what features the iPhone 5 won’t have: A removable battery, a memory card slot, and support for Adobe Flash videos. These features are commonly seen on other phones, but are not what customers expect from Apple products.One feature that Apple recently filed a patent on is being called a “Smart Bezel” by rumor sites. These are areas just outside the screen that can light up and are touch sensitive. They could be game controls or battery indicators, or let you use new finger-swipe gestures to control your iPhone!

Another feature they might add is called NFC, or Near-Field Communication. This is a technology that would let you pay for things by waving your iPhone near a sensor, sort of like what some ‘wave-to-pay’ credit cards can do today. NFC is already in widespread use in Japan, and is being tested in the United States. Apple may decide to hold off on it, though, until people are more comfortable using their phones to make payments.One other possibility is that the iPhone 5 will get induction charging. That’s where you plug in a separate charging pad, and your iPhone recharges just by touching it.

When will the iPhone 5 be announced?
Our best guess is that it’ll be sometime this fall — they might choose to announce it at the yearly iPod event in September, for instance, which would mean that it’d be available in time for the holidays. The iPhone 4 was announced at Apple’s Worldwide Developers Conference last June, though, so the iPhone 5 might debut at this year’s WWDC … or it might not appear until next year. Who knows?It’s possible that Apple’s next big iPhone announcement will be for a 4G Verizon iPhone, instead of the iPhone 5. Networks like Verizon are rolling out super-high speed, 4G wireless infrastructure, and competitors’ phones are already taking advantage of it. Don’t expect Apple to lag behind them for long!

Are there any other new iPhones expected?
One persistent rumor has been that of an “iPhone Nano,” a tiny iPhone with a smaller screen and far less memory. Apple’s been working on a way to let you access your iTunes library online, which might let you get to your music and apps without needing the expensive flash memory chips that a regular iPhone has. That would make the iPhone Nano cheaper as well as smaller.

On the other hand, Apple normally just sells last year’s model at a reduced price, for people who want a cheaper iPhone. Plus, screen resolution issues make a dramatically smaller iPhone unlikely … so file this one under “maybe.”

4G Network Outage : Verizon’s 4G Network Goes Down Cripples Thunderbolts VZW Identifies Outage Source

Verizon’s 4G LTE network is experiencing a major national outage that has largely left its customers without service. The network went down sometime last night and remains unreachable, and unfortunately many users are also unable to connect to Verizon’s 3G service.

After ample speculation, Verizon launched its 4G LTE network in December 2010. While Verizon said it would roll out coverage over the course of the next three years, the original launch was nothing to scoff at, hitting 38 markets and 60 airports in its first wave. Since then, the carrier has introduced its first 4G phone, the HTC Thunderbolt, which debuted to almost instantaneous popularity and strong sales. Just last week Verizon announced it has sold approximately 500,000 4G devices since December, and its second LTE smartphone, the Droid Charge, is set to launch tomorrow.

All has been going according to Verizon’s 4G plan up until last night. The carrier has only commented on its 4G via Twitter: “We’re aware of an issue with 4G LTE connections & our network engineers are working to resolve quickly. Will update here.” Verizon also posted that Thunderbolts are now making voice calls, although any sort of data needs are still crawling.

Verizon’s user forums are full of customer complaints and confusion. One user reported after a call with Verizon support early this morning, there was no ETA for a solution. At the moment, Thunderbolts are operating at about a 1xRTT rate, or 1G. The 4G phone started at $199 with a Verizon contract and $699 without. The phone’s high-speed connectivity was responsible for much of its prestige, and its owners are understandably frustrated by their very expensive and now achingly slow phones.

Adding injury to insult is the fact that these users are having difficulty accessing Verizon’s 3G network. If you’re one of these forsaken phone owners, all may not be lost. According to Android Central, the problem is with Verizon’s Thunderbolt specific 3G/4G networks, and the 3G network its various other smartphones operate on is up and running as per usual. The site claims users can connect via 3G by following these steps:

1. Dial ##778# and hit send.
2. Enter the password: 000000
3. This brings up your programming screen. Select “modem settings” and next “Rev a.” Change this to enabled and then hit “menu.”
4. Reboot your phone, and you should then be connected to Verizon’s basic 3G network.

Various Twitter users have posted the fix, and it seems to be getting some decent recommendations so it’s worth a shot – at least until Verizon comes up with a better solution. Verizon says it has determined the source of the outage and is working on restoring service. We have determined the cause of our issue and are working with our major vendors to restore connections.

Apple moves to quell iPhone data collection fears:
APPLE has moved to quell concerns that it is tracking iPhone users, saying it will reduce location data stored on the phone.The company also said it will fix what it called a software bug that led data to be stored on the device even when location services were turned off.Steve Jobs, Apple’s chief executive, said the company has “never transmitted” the precise location of iPhones to itself.

Apple defended the process it uses to gather location information via the iPhone and unveiled a software update to scale back such practices.In an interview with The Wall Street Journal, Mr Jobs said Apple gathers information from the phone about nearby mobile-phone towers and local wireless, or Wi-Fi, networks.Apple uses that information to build a database that it then uses to quickly locate phones for services like maps.
Mr Jobs, who is on medical leave, said software “bugs” that enabled the iPhone to store months of location data and collect it even when the location services feature was turned off had been discovered in the last few days.Mr Jobs said Apple plans to testify before Congress to respond to questions about the collection and storage of mobile-phone location data.”Of course Apple will testify,” he said.Apple and Google, which makes the key software for Android phones, are facing scrutiny from lawmakers and consumers for the way they gather and handle data about the location of smartphones.

Researchers last week said Apple’s iPhones store unencrypted databases containing months of location information.According to tests conducted by the Journal, these databases were updated even when the phone’s location services were turned off.Beyond the information stored on the phone, the Journal also has reported that iPhones, Android phones and personal computers in some cases regularly transmit their locations back to the respective companies.Apple and Google have both previously said the location data collected via their phones is anonymous and not tied to a specific user.Apple said Wednesday an individual can’t be located using the Wi-Fi and mobile-phone data.

Both companies disclose the collection practices in privacy policies and other places.Apple said it would release an iPhone software update in the next few weeks that will limit to seven days the amount of location data stored on the phone and delete it when location services are turned off.
In the next major release of the operating system, the information would also be encrypted, the company said.Apple also disclosed it is using some of the location information to build a “traffic database” that within a few years will offer current traffic-congestion information to iPhone users.Apple didn’t specify how users would join or decline the service.

Google already uses location data, which Android phones collect every few seconds, to provide such a service.In its statement, Apple acknowledged it was partly responsible for users’ concerns.”Users are confused, partly because the creators of this new technology (including Apple) have not provided enough education about these issues to date,” Apple said.The statement came alongside announcements that the white iPhone 4 will be available in the US later today, and that the second-generation iPad arrives in Japan, Hong Kong, and other new markets this week.

Customers Sue Apple Over iPhone Location-Data Collection:
Two Apple customers have filed a lawsuit accusing the Cupertino, California, company of committing violations of computer-fraud laws by recording location data of iPhone and iPad customers.Vikram Ajjampur, an iPhone customer in Florida, and William Devito, a New York iPad customer, filed the suit in federal court April 22 in Tampa, Florida.“The accessibility of the unencrypted information collected by Apple places users at serious risk of privacy invasions, including stalking” (.pdf), the lawsuit states.

The lawsuit revolves around a discovery publicized last week that a file stored on Apple’s mobile devices contains a log recording geographical data that dates as far back as 10 months ago.Wired.com reported last week that Apple acknowledged in a letter to Rep. Edward Markey (D-Massachusetts) last year that the company deliberately collects anonymized location data from mobile devices in order to build a comprehensive location database that provides improved location services to customers.

Ajjampur and Devito allege that Apple has violated the Computer Fraud and Abuse Act by intentionally accessing the location information without authorization.“By secretly installing software that records users [sic] every moves Apple has accessed Plaintiffs’ computers, in the course of interstate commerce or communication, in excess of the authorization provided by Plaintiffs as described in the Computer Fraud and Abuse Act,” the lawsuit says.Ajjampur and Devito are seeking class action status to represent U.S. iPhone and iPad customers. The complaint seeks an injunction requiring Apple to disable the data collection in a software update, and it also seeks damages for violations committed.

iPhone’s Location-Data Collection Can’t Be Turned Off:
This discovery challenges some of Apple’s claims. As Wired.com reported last week, the company explained in a detailed letter last year that it deliberately collects geodata to store in a comprehensive location database to improve location services. In the letter, Apple noted that customers can disable location-data collection by turning off Location Services in the settings menu.“If customers toggle the switch to ‘Off,’ they may not use location-based services, and no location-based information will be collected,” Apple said in the letter (.pdf).

That doesn’t appear to be the case from WSJ’s testing, as well as multiple independent reports from customers who had the same results.The controversy surrounding Apple’s location-tracking stems from a discovery by two data scientists, who found that a file stored on iPhones and iPads (“consolidated.db”) contains a detailed history of geodata accompanied with time stamps.Apple claimed in its letter last year that the geodata is stored on the device, then anonymized and transmitted back to Apple every 12 hours, using a secure Wi-Fi connection (if one is available).

Although it’s thorough, Apple’s explanation does not address why the stored geodata continues to live on the device permanently after it’s transmitted to Apple, nor does it address why geodata collection appears to persist even when Location Services is turned off.Google does similar geodata collection for its own location-services database. However, it notifies Android users clearly in a prompt when geodata collection will occur, and it also gives users a way to opt out. Also, Android devices do not permanently store geodata after transmitting it to Google.

Meanwhile, a MacRumors.com reader claims he sent an e-mail to CEO Steve Jobs asking him to explain why Apple tracks geodata, threatening to switch to an Android device.“Maybe you could shed some light on this for me before I switch to a Droid,” the reader wrote. “They don’t track me.”The CEO shot back a terse reply, defending his company and attacking his competitor Google, according to the reader: “Oh yes they do. We don’t track anyone. The info circulating around is false.”Apple has not commented on the authenticity of the e-mail.

The purported e-mail is similar in nature to many e-mails that Jobs has sent to customers in the past: It’s concise and still manages to pull off some word play. Jobs would be accurate to claim that Apple is not tracking customers directly — but instead it is using iPhones to gather information about nearby cell towers and Wi-Fi stations, occasionally combined with GPS data. In other words, Apple is tracking geodata from mobile devices, as Google is also doing.Apple has not commented on the location-tracking issue since the story broke last week.

While the collected geodata doesn’t reveal specific addresses for locations you’ve visited, it can still leave a pretty rich trail of a user’s movements. Combine this data with other pieces of information on the iPhone, like your messages and photos, and you’ve got a device that knows more about you than you do yourself, says The Atlantic’s Alexis Madrigal.

Madrigal tested an iPhone forensics program called Lantern, which stitches together contacts, text messages and geodata into a neat interface that reconstructed a timeline of his life.“Immediately after trying out Lantern, I enabled the iPhone’s passcode and set it to erase all data on the phone,” Madrigal said. “This thing remembers more about where I’ve been and what I’ve said than I do, and I’m damn sure I don’t want it falling into anyone’s hands.”

Apple’s Location Data Collection Probed in South Korea:
Apple Inc. (AAPL) is being investigated by South Korea’s communications regulator to determine if it is breaking the law by saving data on the location of iPhone users.The Korea Communications Commission asked Apple how often information is collected and saved, and whether users have a choice over whether it is saved or deleted, the commission said in an e-mailed statement today. Apple must explain why such data is saved on devices and if it’s stored on the company’s servers.Steve Park, a Seoul-based spokesman for Apple, declined to comment.

The commission also said it will form a team to study how to better protect smartphone users’ information and privacy.Apple has been investigated by French, German and Italian privacy regulators since analysts reported the company’s devices track and store data about the movements of iPhone and iPad users.Apple’s iOS 4 operating system for the iPhone and iPad 3G logs latitude-longitude coordinates along with the time of the visit, according to a study posted on the website owned by O’Reilly Media, a Sebastopol, California-based publisher that organizes technology trade conferences.

A video has appeared online that demonstrates a new multitasking interface for iOS (that closely resembles the Mac OS’s Exposé feature) running on a 64-gigabyte white iPhone 4, courtesy of the intrepid Vietnamese gadget hounds Tinhte.

The group says the white iPhone is legitimate (not just a knockoff) and that it’s running a “test” version of iOS that has never been seen before.

It’s difficult to determine the veracity of their claims, but I wouldn’t be surprised if Apple was looking to improve its current multitasking interface — which consists merely of scrolling through icons in your iPhone’s dock — with something that’s a lot more visual.

In the video below, you can see that the new multitasking interface is accessible with a double-tap of the iPhone’s home button, and it displays large card-like icons representing the apps currently running on your phone. To close apps, you simply hold down on the app’s icon, just like you would in the current system. Spotlight search is also accessible from the top of the screen.
The interface does resemble the popular multitasking jailbroken app Multiflow, but there are significant differences from the current release of that app. Tinhte could be trying to pass off another jailbroken app as legitimate, but given how much their credibility with the gadget community would suffer, that doesn’t seem very likely. It’s possible that the software is an early release of iOS 5, which is expected to improve multitasking and notification features for the platform.

iPhone 5? iPhone 4S? Too early to nail down a name. But the new handheld sports a speedy A5 processor, according to a new report.
iPhone 4 units kitted out with the new A5 chip are being sent to a handful of developers, according to a new report from 9to5mac.com. The A5 –– which already powers the iPad 2 –– is a next-generation processor, capable of chewing through data approximately nine times faster than the A4, the chip currently found in AT&T and Verizon iPhone 4 handsets.
So why should you care? Well, because it looks like this A5 chip will be a centerpiece of the advertising campaign for the new iPhone 5. “[W]e have heard Apple is going to push this gaming performance and speed as one of the next-generation iPhone’s major marketing points,” Mark Gurman of 9to5mac.com wrote today. Gurman does not identify his source.

As for the iPhone 4S designation –– a nice echo of the iPhone 3G S –– that’s just shorthand. “The person who chose to share this information with us calls it the ‘iPhone 4S’, though the device itself only has typical Apple prototype nomenclature,” Gurman notes. “He also shared that the device spends its evenings in a safe in the company’s offices.” Just like a spy movie.

The iPhone 4S scuttlebutt comes as a gazillion blogs echo with news of the (probably) forthcoming iPhone 5, which is expected to hit shelves in September. Just to be clear: Neither iPhone 5 nor iPhone 4S is a set-in-stone moniker. There is going to be a new iPhone, and it will almost definitely include the A5 chip, and a better camera, but we have no idea what the thing will be called, and neither does anyone else.

That’s according to developers Alasdair Allan and Pete Warden, who reported their finding at the Where 2.0 conference Wednesday in Santa Clara, Calif. The man’s house was raided by agents from the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency last week, which later turned out to be a mistake. The reason? Department of Homeland Security agents traced a distributor of child pornography back to the man’s home Wi-Fi router.

The trouble was, the man wasn’t the one distributing the illicit and illegal material — authorities say it was his neighbor, who was connecting to his Wi-Fi network. The agents didn’t have the wrong house, but it took them a week to determine that they had the wrong suspect.iPhone 5.

For the less tech savvy among us, protecting an Internet router can be a daunting task, requiring technical know-how that gets confusing. But with just a few seconds, the router’s manual, and some understanding of what you’re looking for, setting up at least some router security can be pretty easy, and can save Internet users from issues like identity theft and an unfortunate visit from the U.S. government. Here are a few tips for keeping your network, and your data, away from those who would hijack it.

1. Set up a password – or even better – an encryption key
Adding some kind of password to your network is a way to immediately discourage probably 99 percent of the people who could jack into your Wi-Fi connection remotely, and it really is just about the easiest thing ever to do to protect yourself. All you need is the Ethernet cable that comes with a router when you pull it out of the box or installed by a cable company, and the manual that comes with the router. By using the cable to plug directly into the router, a computer can access the router’s internal settings using an Internet browser. The address (usually in the form of what’s called an IP address, generally 192.168.1.1 or something similar) gets you into the router’s inner workings, but you need the cable to access it, so it can’t be altered remotely. The router’s manufacturer password is also included in the manual (usually it’s “admin” or “password”), and you should change that too from the settings menu for added internal security to keep prying eyes out.

From there, it’s usually as simple as going to the security settings for your router and activating an encrypted password called a WEP or WPA key. This is presented in the form of a long chain of letters and numbers that the router can generate for you. You can specify a password of your own, but the router’s generated key is a much stronger encryption than using a password someone might be able to guess. Most modern computers will save passwords when you connect to your home Wi-Fi network, so you shouldn’t need to specify the network password again when signing onto the Internet, unless something gets reset.

2. Change your network’s SSID and make it invisible
From within the same settings menus that you adjusted the MAC settings and turned on your encryption key, you can also set whether your Wi-Fi network is “discoverable.” This means that the router won’t broadcast its ID information (called the SSID) over the air for other devices to lock onto. Only devices that know to look for the router, like the ones you’ve already authorized to connect to it, will be able to use your connection.

Generally, you’ll find the ability to alter discoverability in the security tab of your router’s settings browser window. It’s usually a button that discusses making your network discoverable or disabling SSID broadcast. This is also a good opportunity to change your router’s SSID to something other than the manufacturer preset. There’s a reason you see so many networks named “Linksys” or “D-Link” — those are routers that have their manufacturer defaults still activated, and they suggest to hackers that the passwords are still set to defaults as well. Either way, it’s easier for someone to get into your network when they have more information, and a manufacturer SSID doesn’t help. Change it, then make it invisible. Just remember: You don’t want your network discoverable, and you don’t want your router to broadcast its SSID. Turn those things off.

3. Assign IP addresses to your devices
This gets a bit technical, but like the MAC address filtering, it’s not nearly as complex as it at first seems. Each device that connects to the Internet does so using what’s called an IP address. Most networks use a system called “dynamic IP addresses,” which means that every time you connect to your network, the system assigns a temporary IP address to your system. That’s easy, but it also means anyone jacking into your network can get a temporary address just as easily as you can.

Instead, look for a tab in your router’s setup menu that lets you set “static IP addresses.” Like MAC filtering, you should be able to see the addresses of your devices at the moment; write them down, or specify a series of numbers to the router when you’re prompted to. These look complex (they’re usually long, like the 192.168.1.1 address), but that doesn’t mean they have to be complicated. You can actually set addresses with the same sets of numbers up front, but alter the numbers at the end to keep them consistent and easy to remember for you, but more difficult for intruders to access.

Once you set static IP addresses, you’ll have to use the numbers you wrote down on your computers when they try to connect to the network. In your Network Settings, you can specify a device’s IP address so that it always uses the same number, then you can tell your router to only allow device’s using those specified addresses to connect. While the MAC filtering will keep out some less in-the-know network jumpers, more complex hackers can get around that technology; they’ll have more trouble with your static, filtered IP

4. Avoid open, unprotected Wi-Fi networks
This is more for when you’re out in the world than at home, using your computer or smartphone to try to access the Internet when you’re at the airport or in other places. Beware of open, access-free networks. If they’re open to you, that means they’re open to other people, too, and your sensitive information can be plucked out of the air by people who have a little bit of expertise in this area.

“Free Public Wi-Fi,” for example, is a network that will often pop up in public places when you’re searching for a network. Don’t connect to it, though, as it isn’t really a free public network, and could very well be a quick and easy way for someone with ill intentions to get access to your computer.

For the most part, the best thing you can do is avoid open networks you don’t trust whenever possible. If you do decide to access an open network, limit what you do on it. Don’t access sensitive websites or use important data like your bank passwords while attached to the network. You should also take steps to keep your computer from saving sensitive Internet information that could be accessed later, like a history or cookies cache. These are bits of data your web browser saves from websites to make accessing them easier later. When you tell a website to save your password, for example, it leaves a “cookie,” or small program, on your browser for use later. You can easily clear these from your browser’s settings menu.

These are simple steps you can take to protect your network, your data and your privacy, but the technical aspect often frightens off people who aren’t familiar with their Internet hardware. Trust us when we say that it’s usually less complicated than it appears. Consult your router’s manual if you need to, and look for the keywords in your router’s settings menu: things like “encryption key,” “firewall,” “disabling broadcasting and IP” and “MAC address filters” are good. Once you set them up and write the numbers down, you should be able to breathe a little easier knowing your access to the Internet is protected.

What will it look like?
Last year’s model, the iPhone 4, had a glass backplate that could get scratched. It’s possible that the iPhone 5 will have a brushed metal backplate, which would help keep it from scratching and make the phone lighter as well. There have been some recent rumors that the phone could get considerably thinner, even tapering toward the bottom. The square edges could round out, making it look a little more like an iPod touch.
Besides that, we’ve heard that Steve Jobs isn’t a fan of physical buttons; the iPhone 4 only has one, on its front. The iPhone 5 might turn that one physical home button into a virtual, on-screen home button, which would get out of the way while you’re watching videos. This would give it a four-inch screen, half an inch bigger than the iPhone 4′s. But another rumor has the display bumping up to only a 3.7-inch screen, and the home button getting slightly larger.Remember, none of this info is coming from Apple. It’s all rumor, speculation and guessing, so take it with a grain of salt.

It’ll have a faster, probably dual-core processor, plus more memory and an improved camera — one that might be able to take 8 megapixel still pictures and record 1080p HD video. You’ll be able to play more realistic games, switch between open apps more quickly, and keep more web pages open at once.Beyond that, you can bet that Apple doesn’t want a repeat of “Antennagate,” and will be paying special attention to the iPhone 5′s antenna to make sure there are fewer connection issues.

Will it have any new features?
We already know what features the iPhone 5 won’t have: A removable battery, a memory card slot, and support for Adobe Flash videos. These features are commonly seen on other phones, but are not what customers expect from Apple products.One feature that Apple recently filed a patent on is being called a “Smart Bezel” by rumor sites. These are areas just outside the screen that can light up and are touch sensitive. They could be game controls or battery indicators, or let you use new finger-swipe gestures to control your iPhone!

Another feature they might add is called NFC, or Near-Field Communication. This is a technology that would let you pay for things by waving your iPhone near a sensor, sort of like what some ‘wave-to-pay’ credit cards can do today. NFC is already in widespread use in Japan, and is being tested in the United States. Apple may decide to hold off on it, though, until people are more comfortable using their phones to make payments.One other possibility is that the iPhone 5 will get induction charging. That’s where you plug in a separate charging pad, and your iPhone recharges just by touching it.

When will the iPhone 5 be announced?
Our best guess is that it’ll be sometime this fall — they might choose to announce it at the yearly iPod event in September, for instance, which would mean that it’d be available in time for the holidays. The iPhone 4 was announced at Apple’s Worldwide Developers Conference last June, though, so the iPhone 5 might debut at this year’s WWDC … or it might not appear until next year. Who knows?It’s possible that Apple’s next big iPhone announcement will be for a 4G Verizon iPhone, instead of the iPhone 5. Networks like Verizon are rolling out super-high speed, 4G wireless infrastructure, and competitors’ phones are already taking advantage of it. Don’t expect Apple to lag behind them for long!

Are there any other new iPhones expected?
One persistent rumor has been that of an “iPhone Nano,” a tiny iPhone with a smaller screen and far less memory. Apple’s been working on a way to let you access your iTunes library online, which might let you get to your music and apps without needing the expensive flash memory chips that a regular iPhone has. That would make the iPhone Nano cheaper as well as smaller.

On the other hand, Apple normally just sells last year’s model at a reduced price, for people who want a cheaper iPhone. Plus, screen resolution issues make a dramatically smaller iPhone unlikely … so file this one under “maybe.”

Lying on his family room floor with assault weapons trained on him, shouts of “pedophile!” and “pornographer!” stinging like his fresh cuts and bruises, the Buffalo homeowner didn’t need long to figure out the reason for the early morning wake-up call from a swarm of federal agents.That new wireless router. He’d gotten fed up trying to set a password. Someone must have used his Internet connection, he thought.

“We know who you are! You downloaded thousands of images at 11:30 last night,” the man’s lawyer, Barry Covert, recounted the agents saying. They referred to a screen name, “Doldrum.”

“No, I didn’t,” he insisted. “Somebody else could have but I didn’t do anything like that.”.Law enforcement officials say the case is a cautionary tale. Their advice:

Password-protect your wireless router.
Plenty of others would agree. The Sarasota, Fla. man, for example, who got a similar visit from the FBI last year after someone on a boat docked in a marina outside his building used a potato chip can as an antenna to boost his wireless signal and download an astounding 10 million images of child porn, or the North Syracuse, N.Y., man who in December 2009 opened his door to police who’d been following an electronic trail of illegal videos and images. The man’s neighbor pleaded guilty April 12.For two hours that March morning in Buffalo, agents tapped away at the homeowner’s desktop computer, eventually taking it with them, along with his and his wife’s iPads and iPhones.

Within three days, investigators determined the homeowner had been telling the truth: If someone was downloading child pornography through his wireless signal, it wasn’t him. About a week later, agents arrested a 25-year-old neighbor and charged him with distribution of child pornography. The case is pending in federal court.It’s unknown how often unsecured routers have brought legal trouble for subscribers. Besides the criminal investigations, the Internet is full of anecdotal accounts of people who’ve had to fight accusations of illegally downloading music or movies.

Whether you’re guilty or not, “you look like the suspect,” said Orin Kerr, a professor at George Washington University Law School, who said that’s just one of many reasons to secure home routers.Experts say the more savvy hackers can go beyond just connecting to the Internet on the host’s dime and monitor Internet activity and steal passwords or other sensitive information.
A study released in February provides a sense of how often computer users rely on the generosity — or technological shortcomings — of their neighbors to gain Internet access.

The poll conducted for the Wi-Fi Alliance, the industry group that promotes wireless technology standards, found that among 1,054 Americans age 18 and older, 32 percent acknowledged trying to access a Wi-Fi network that wasn’t theirs. An estimated 201 million households worldwide use Wi-Fi networks, according to the alliance.The same study, conducted by Wakefield Research, found that 40 percent said they would be more likely to trust someone with their house key than with their Wi-Fi network password.

For some, though, leaving their wireless router open to outside use is a philosophical decision, a way of returning the favor for the times they’ve hopped on to someone else’s network to check e-mail or download directions while away from home .
“I think it’s convenient and polite to have an open Wi-Fi network,” said Rebecca Jeschke, whose home signal is accessible to anyone within range.

“Public Wi-Fi is for the common good and I’m happy to participate in that — and lots of people are,” said Jeschke, a spokeswoman for the Electronic Frontier Foundation, a San Francisco-based nonprofit that takes on cyberspace civil liberties issues.Experts say wireless routers come with encryption software, but setting it up means a trip to the manual.

The government’s Computer Emergency Readiness Team recommends home users make their networks invisible to others by disabling the identifier broadcasting function that allows wireless access points to announce their presence. It also advises users to replace any default network names or passwords, since those are widely known, and to keep an eye on the manufacturer’s website for security patches or updates.People who keep an open wireless router won’t necessarily know when someone else is piggybacking on the signal, which usually reaches 300-400 feet, though a slower connection may be a clue.

For the Buffalo homeowner, who didn’t want to be identified, the tip-off wasn’t nearly as subtle.It was 6:20 a.m. March 7 when he and his wife were awakened by the sound of someone breaking down their rear door. He threw a robe on and walked to the top of the stairs, looking down to see seven armed people with jackets bearing the initials I-C-E, which he didn’t immediately know stood for Immigration and Customs Enforcement.

“They are screaming at him, ‘Get down! Get down on the ground!’ He’s saying, ‘Who are you? Who are you?’” Covert said.”One of the agents runs up and basically throws him down the stairs, and he’s got the cuts and bruises to show for it,” said Covert, who said the homeowner plans no lawsuit. When he was allowed to get up, agents escorted him and watched as he used the bathroom and dressed.

The homeowner later got an apology from U.S. Attorney William Hochul and Immigration and Customs Enforcement Special Agent in Charge Lev Kubiak.
But this wasn’t a case of officers rushing into the wrong house. Court filings show exactly what led them there and why.On Feb. 11, an investigator with the Department of Homeland Security, which oversees cybersecurity enforcement, signed in to a peer-to-peer file sharing program from his office. After connecting with someone by the name of “Doldrum,” the agent browsed through his shared files for videos and images and found images and videos depicting children engaged in sexual acts.

The agent identified the IP address, or unique identification number, of the router, then got the service provider to identify the subscriber.Investigators could have taken an extra step before going inside the house and used a laptop or other device outside the home to see whether there was an unsecured signal. That alone wouldn’t have exonerated the homeowner, but it would have raised the possibility that someone else was responsible for the downloads.

After a search of his devices proved the homeowner’s innocence, investigators went back to the peer-to-peer software and looked at logs that showed what other IP addresses Doldrum had connected from. Two were associated with the State University of New York at Buffalo and accessed using a secure token that UB said was assigned to a student living in an apartment adjacent to the homeowner. Agents arrested John Luchetti March 17. He has pleaded not guilty to distribution of child pornography.

Luchetti is not charged with using his neighbor’s Wi-Fi without permission. Whether it was illegal is up for debate.”The question,” said Kerr, “is whether it’s unauthorized access and so you have to say, ‘Is an open wireless point implicitly authorizing users or not?’”We don’t know,” Kerr said. “The law prohibits unauthorized access and it’s just not clear what’s authorized with an open unsecured wireless.”

In Germany, the country’s top criminal court ruled last year that Internet users must secure their wireless connections to prevent others from illegally downloading data. The court said Internet users could be fined up to $126 if a third party takes advantage of their unprotected line, though it stopped short of holding the users responsible for illegal content downloaded by the third party.The ruling came after a musician sued an Internet user whose wireless connection was used to download a song, which was then offered on an online file sharing network. The user was on vacation when the song was downloaded.

A video has appeared online that demonstrates a new multitasking interface for iOS (that closely resembles the Mac OS’s Exposé feature) running on a 64-gigabyte white iPhone 4, courtesy of the intrepid Vietnamese gadget hounds Tinhte.

The group says the white iPhone is legitimate (not just a knockoff) and that it’s running a “test” version of iOS that has never been seen before.

It’s difficult to determine the veracity of their claims, but I wouldn’t be surprised if Apple was looking to improve its current multitasking interface — which consists merely of scrolling through icons in your iPhone’s dock — with something that’s a lot more visual.

In the video below, you can see that the new multitasking interface is accessible with a double-tap of the iPhone’s home button, and it displays large card-like icons representing the apps currently running on your phone. To close apps, you simply hold down on the app’s icon, just like you would in the current system. Spotlight search is also accessible from the top of the screen.
The interface does resemble the popular multitasking jailbroken app Multiflow, but there are significant differences from the current release of that app. Tinhte could be trying to pass off another jailbroken app as legitimate, but given how much their credibility with the gadget community would suffer, that doesn’t seem very likely. It’s possible that the software is an early release of iOS 5, which is expected to improve multitasking and notification features for the platform.

iPhone 4 units kitted out with the new A5 chip are being sent to a handful of developers, according to a new report from 9to5mac.com. The A5 –– which already powers the iPad 2 –– is a next-generation processor, capable of chewing through data approximately nine times faster than the A4, the chip currently found in AT&T and Verizon iPhone 4 handsets.
So why should you care? Well, because it looks like this A5 chip will be a centerpiece of the advertising campaign for the new iPhone 5. “[W]e have heard Apple is going to push this gaming performance and speed as one of the next-generation iPhone’s major marketing points,” Mark Gurman of 9to5mac.com wrote today. Gurman does not identify his source.

As for the iPhone 4S designation –– a nice echo of the iPhone 3G S –– that’s just shorthand. “The person who chose to share this information with us calls it the ‘iPhone 4S’, though the device itself only has typical Apple prototype nomenclature,” Gurman notes. “He also shared that the device spends its evenings in a safe in the company’s offices.” Just like a spy movie.

The iPhone 4S scuttlebutt comes as a gazillion blogs echo with news of the (probably) forthcoming iPhone 5, which is expected to hit shelves in September. Just to be clear: Neither iPhone 5 nor iPhone 4S is a set-in-stone moniker. There is going to be a new iPhone, and it will almost definitely include the A5 chip, and a better camera, but we have no idea what the thing will be called, and neither does anyone else.

Apple’s iPhone and iPad devices have long been storing positions and timestamps in a hidden file on the user’s computer. That’s according to developers Alasdair Allan and Pete Warden, who reported their finding at the Where 2.0 conference Wednesday in Santa Clara, Calif. Allan stumbled on the discovery while looking through iTunes’ backup files on his computer. Author of the book “Learning iPhone Programming” for O’Reilly Media, Allan came across “consolidated.db”, a backup file updated whenever a user syncs their iPhone or iPad with iTunes. These reports are conflicting because Verizon seldom releases two major smartphone products at the same time. One source suggested that the Droid Bionic’s May 12 launch date was an old launch date because recent rumors suggest that the Droid Bionic has been delayed due to technical issues.

Since these documents are from anonymous sources, and Verizon often pushes later release dates depending on markets and testing, all we can be sure of is that Verizon is in charge and usually announces its latest smartphones on a Tuesday before the Thursday sale date.

Apple Has Huge Quarter — But There’s A Big Concern On The Horizon :
Apple reported another strong quarter yesterday. Sales of Macs and iPhones were tremendous. The only potential concern was weak iPad sales, but this appears to have been due to Apple’s inability to make more iPads, not a lack of demand.

The strong iPhone sales temporarily banished concerns that Apple is experiencing a repeat of the 1990s — in which Apple introduces a new integrated software and hardware product that blows everyone away, only to see its industry lead disappear as hardware vendors compete against it by adopting a common software platform.

In the 1990s, the product that got eclipsed was the Mac, and Apple almost went bust. Now, the product is the iPhone, which has taken the industry by storm but recently lost its market-share lead to Google’s Android platform.

The iPhone now accounts for half of Apple’s revenue. And, in short, Apple is fighting a similar war to the one it fought and lost in the 1990s. This time, Google is playing the role Microsoft played the last time around. And Android has come out of nowhere to grab the industry lead.

The good news for Apple fans is that there are several key differences between this war and the last one.

First, Apple has learned something from the 1990s, which is that it needs to sell its products at the same price (or better) than the competition. Last time around, Macs were consistently more expensive than PCs, and most consumers and businesses opted to save money rather than shelling out for the “premium” product.

Second, Android is a much more fragmented platform than Microsoft’s Windows ever was. Instead of iPhone vs. Android, it’s really the iPhone vs. many flavors of Android. And because the advantage of having more market share is that developers can develop for a single platform and reach more people, the fragmentation can be a problem.

Lastly, Apple’s platform extends beyond the iPhone to iPods and iPads as well. When you include all of these devices in the “market share” calculation, Apple still maintains a market-share lead over Android.

So, Apple fans should certainly be concerned that the history we saw in the 1990s will repeat itself this time around. But there are also several factors that suggest it will be different this time.

Microsoft is set to launch an entirely new updated wave of Office applications in June 2010. The Office suite will be updated for Windows, including ribbon support for all products, and will also be launching Office 2010 for Mac OS X sometime in 2010.

Office 2010 will be released in six different flavours, including a free version that includes Microsoft Word and Excel, but comes with limited functionality and includes advertisements. The editions of Office 2010 will come in Starter, Home and Student, Home and Business, Standard, Professional and Professional Plus.

Office 2010 Professional Plus, which is available for public beta, will offer all of the office products, excluding Visio 2010 and Project 2010. Microsoft will be releasing Office 2010 with a full version and upgrade version, for users that have Office 2007 installed. Office 2010 will be available for Windows XP, Vista and Windows 7 in both 32-bit and 64-bit, excluding Windows XP x64.

No official pricing for the full version or upgrade edition of Office 2010 has been announced yet. Although the retail store date is scheduled for June 2010, users should be able to get their hands on a download-able version through TechNet and MSDN earlier than the street date.

For the time being, users with the beta can check out the top new features for Office 2010.

Apparently the Department of Defense believes that PS3s are a better value when it comes to supercomputers than IBM products specifically designed for the purpose. Granted recent price drops probably didn't hurt in justifying a 2,200 console order either.
This isn't the first time that the DoD is using PS3 consoles for supercomputing. In fact, these 2,200 units are going to be added to an existing Linux cluster of 336 PS3s used by the United States Air Force. According to Justification Review Documents, the purchase is all about getting the best value out the DoD's budget:

With respect to cell processors, a single 1U server configured with two 3.2GHz cell processors can cost up to $8K while two Sony PS3s cost approximately $600. Though a single 3.2 GHz cell processor can deliver over 200 GFLOPS, whereas the Sony PS3 configuration delivers approximately 150 GFLOPS, the approximately tenfold cost difference per GFLOP makes the Sony PS3 the only viable technology for HPC applications.

I'm all for balancing cost and features, but isn't it just a bit curious that someone thought to save on upgrading the supercomputer just after Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 was released?

As April draws near, non believers around the globe celebrate a holiday on the first of the month known as April Fool’s day. The traditional practice of this day is to play some sort of practical joke on someone and make him the “April Fool”.

Pranks performed on this day range form the simple, (such as saying, “your shoes are untied!”) to the elaborate. Whatever the prank, the trickster usually ends it by yelling to his victim, “April fool!”

The history of April Fool’s Day is not totally clear. No exact date can be found pinpointing the first official celebration of the holiday. There are, however, many narrations regarding the reason the tradition is practiced. One narration states that it is a day the Spanish celebrate in remembrance of the day that they defeated the Muslims and swept them from power in lower Spain. According to this narration, the Christian army could not conquer the Muslims there and sent spies to discover why. They discovered that the Muslims were strong on faith and obedient to Allah. The tradition goes on saying that the Christians sent in alcohol and tobacco, which the Muslims used and became the means in which they lost their obedience to Allah. Then the Christian army invaded lower Spain and conquered the Muslims on the first of April and began celebrating April Fool’s Day ever since. As this story has been circulating between our Muslim brothers strengthening their beliefs about the history of this day I deemed it appropriate to clarify a few points about the history of April Fool’s Day. The truth of the matter is that this story is not true in many aspects.

First, let us confirm the historic fact that Muslim rule in Spain ended on the 12th of January in the Christian year of 1492 A.D. April Fool’s Day was not heard of until over sixty years later. The most authentic reports according to Christian historical books such as Encyclopedia Britannica as well as many others trace the roots of the holiday back to 16th century France. Prior to the year 1582, the new year was celebrated for eight days, starting with the 25th of March. The celebration culminated on April 1st. With the reform of the Christian calendar under King Charles IX, through the influence of Pope Gregory, the Gregorian calendar was introduced, and New years Day was moved to the first of January. However, due to lack of communications in those days, many people did not receive the news for several years. Others, the most obstinate crowd, refused to accept the new calendar and continued to celebrate the New Year on April 1. These backward people were classified as “fool” by the general public and were often subject to some ridicule. Hence, the tradition of April Fool’s Day began.

Second, we should acknowledge the fact that tobacco products were not even invented until after the time of the fall of Muslims in Spain. According to the State College in Framingham, they quote that smoking of any kind did not exist in Spain until after it was brought back from the New World in the times after King Ferdinand of Spain had come to power. So regarding the rumor claiming that April Fool’s Day is a celebration of the take over of Muslim Spain, it is clear the whole thing is a fabricated story. It is in fact a lie made by the nonbelievers to mislead Muslims and in realty create a “Muslims Fool Day”! True Muslims would never propagate lies especially when it comes to the history of Islam. It is our duty to educate our brothers on these kinds of topics.

Regardless of the history of April Fool’s Day or not, there still isn’t any sort of a reason for a Muslim to practice such a foolish tradition. It is a in reality a holiday created by the enemies of Allah to prove how really foolish they are by denying the truth revealed to the world through the Holy Prophet (peace be upon him). As Muslims it is our job to avoid imitating the nonbelievers in all aspects of life and this includes celebration of their holidays. No matter how hard you try to please them you will always fail unless you become one of them. And to become one of them is to earn Allah’s wrath. And to earn Allah’s wrath is to condemn oneself. Allah says in the Qur’an, “And never will the Jews nor the Christians be pleased with you until you follow their millat (traditions, ways, religion, etc.).”(Chapter 2, verse 122)

Dear readers! Know that Islam is the only religion, which is free from faults and innovations. Such an easy religion to follow is Islam. The Prophet said, “Indeed religion is easy”(Bukhari). Allah just asks that we obey Him and His messenger sallalahu alaihi wasallam. Yet we try to go out of our ways to be obedient to those cursed people who have shown disobedience to Allah. What a pity for him who chooses to enjoy the pleasures of the world over the pleasures of the hereafter. By imitating the nonbelievers, all we do is show people that we are one of them and that they are beloved to us as we to them. The Holy Prophet said, “ A person will be raised on the Day of Judgment with whom he loves.” So whom do we prefer to be raised with, the Noble Prophet sallalahu alaihi wasallam and his companions or the celebrators of April Fool’s Day? The answer is obvious to all. In this age of innumerous trails and tribulations, we must try our hardest to stay steadfast on the straight path shown to us by our Beloved Prophet sallalahu alaihi wasallam, which is the only path with guaranteed success from Allah. In the long run, he will be successful who avoids such useless practices that are nothing more then a waste of time. May Allah keep us pure from such deceptions and avoid making us the “April Fool”. Ameen.

The Silent Hill franchise has always been the blossoming antithesis of its survival horror rivals. Where Resident Evil has the player desperately foraging every drawer, chest and corpse for ammunition to fire at hordes of flesh-eating creatures, Silent Hill immerses the player in a macabre and enigmatic world of suspense, panic and uneasiness filled with nightmarish aberrations and the most flaccid of weapons to fight them with.

All the more disappointing that, with all this horror ancestry behind it, Silent Hill: Homecoming rarely does any of these things, and it is half-arsed and arbitrary when it does. The environments at first seem to convincingly capture the atmospheric and claustrophobic mood that you expect from this franchise, but the illusion is almost immediately exposed by the obvious linear nature of the game. You’ll spend a lot of your time wandering aimlessly up and down corridors and streets, fruitlessly trying door after door, only to be continually presented with that blasphemous profanity of action/adventure gaming: “This lock is broken”. You are thus left with the aneurism-inducing task of trying every door to figure out which predetermined path you’re supposed to be following.

In terms of combat, the clunky system of the previous games, which limited your capacity for fighting, was an endearing weakness that genuinely added to the sense of desperation and helplessness. This has been somewhat lost in Homecoming with the inclusion of a dodge button making a lot of the encounters with skinless dogs and spasmodic faceless nurses a little too easy and formulaic.

Homecoming is more of a Hostel-nodding, Jacob’s Ladder-winking attempt at emulating the Silent Hill movie, rather than the original game. We’re left with something that looks like a genuine tribute to its thriller heritage, but its mediocre and clichéd story, as well as linear and more combat-centric gameplay, means that Homecoming is too old-fashioned and lacks the originality and tension that made the previous games so enjoyable.

ATI revealed its last generation Radeon 5000 graphics family last September, when we got the chance to review the ATI Radeon HD 5870, and what a treat that was.

In a few tests the single-GPU Radeon HD 5870 was able to outgun the mighty GeForce GTX 295, while in most it managed to match or improve upon the Radeon HD 4870 X2. As you are likely aware, both of these products carry dual GPUs, which bring a number of implications, not to mention bigger price tags.

Looking forward we knew Nvidia would have no immediate response to the new Radeons, while on the other hand ATI was not done unleashing its full series of products. Subsequently we looked at two more products that were meant to underperform the flagship HD 5870: the slightly cut down Radeon HD 5850 and the mainstream aimed HD 5770.

But as we discussed in our preliminary Radeon 5870 review, on the horizon was also a follow-up to the Radeon HD 4870 X2, code-named "Hemlock XT", which in essence would put together a pair of Radeon HD 5870 GPUs on a single PCB.

Today AMD is officially unveiling the Hemlock as the new ATI Radeon HD 5970, hoping to expand its current dominance in single-GPU performance with the fastest single-slot graphics card on the market -- a title that until today was reserved for Nvidia's dual-GPU GeForce GTX 295.

The Radeon HD 5970 looks to be well suited for the job. The GPUs used in this card use exactly the same configuration found on the Radeon HD 5870, while core and memory frequencies match those of the Radeon HD 5850. This provides the HD 5970 with an unmatched memory bandwidth of 256GB/s.

All this horsepower will come at a hefty price, as AMD expects to charge as much as $600 for it. This is a bit hard to swallow, but all things considered it's about where we expected it to stand among the rest of high-end graphics offerings.

The $400 Radeon HD 5870 is still sold out virtually everywhere due to extreme shortages. The Radeon HD 5850 version still costs $300, meaning that a pair of them would cost the same amount as a single Radeon HD 5970, and we do not expect the performance to be nearly as good. On the other side of the equation, Nvidia's top performer, the GeForce GTX 295 is selling for around $500.

As we see it, only extreme users looking for the best possible gaming experience - or the bragging rights attached to the label - will find the Radeon HD 5970 to make complete sense.

Knowing this is the 5970's intended market, AMD has stamped a big "unlocked" label over the card in our press kit. Perhaps more marketing buzz than actual functionality, the Radeon HD 5970 allows you to jack core and memory frequencies as high as you like -- or at least as high as they will go without compromising stability. This in itself is far from exciting news as there's been software available to do just that for ages.

The most interesting part should come from the ability to adjust voltages and thus increase the card's overclocking room, something we'll be checking in detail next.

Radeon HD 5970: The Card In Detail

The Radeon HD 5970 is a truly massive graphics card, even for a high-end dual-GPU product. Its dimensions whale anything previously seen, measuring in at 30cm long and weighing a little over 1kg.

Our review sample hung a total of 6cm off the edge of our Asus P6T Deluxe motherboard used for testing.

Cooling the Hemlock XT GPUs is a large aluminum heatsink made up of 36 fins. Measuring 16cm long, 7cm wide, and 2.5cm tall, it is slightly larger than that used in the Radeon HD 5870. Connected to the base of this heatsink is a massive copper plate which helps improve efficiency, while a 75x20mm blower fan draws air in from within the case and pushes it out through the rear of the graphics card.

For the most part this fan operates very quietly, helped by the impressively low 42 watt idle consumption of the Radeon HD 5970. When gaming, the fan will inevitably spin up as the card can consume up to 294 watts under load, but even with the increased thermal stress the 5970 does not scream at intolerable levels.

The heatsink and fan have been enclosed within a custom built housing that conceals the entire graphics card, which is the same design used with the Radeon HD 5870. This setup helps protect the card very well; Nvidia has been using similar enclosures for some time with their most prized graphics cards, such as the GTX 295.

Removing the heatsink exposes the two GPUs, GDDR5 memory chips, and a few other critical components.

With the heatsink off the Radeon HD 5970 looks almost identical to the Radeon HD 4870 X2, though it is noticeably longer.

Key changes involve the new GDDR5 memory, improved power circuitry, and an updated 2.0 PEX bridge from PLX Technologies, used to link the GPUs together. All this hardware is cooled via the large heatsink that covers the majority of the card’s 30cm long PCB.

GDDR5 memory works at an ever more impressive frequency (1.0GHz x 4) on this particular model, which features a total capacity of 2GB. The core configuration of the Radeon HD 5970 doubles everything in the 4870 X2 with 1600 (320x5) SPUs, 80 TAUs (Texture Address Units), and 32 ROPs (Rasterization Operator Units).

AMD’s reference card came equipped with Hynix ICs (H5GQ1H24AFR-T2C parts). These GDDR5 modules are rated for 1.25GHz operation, so we expect to push them beyond the stock 1.0GHz configuration without hassle.

In order to feed the graphics card enough power, a pair of PCI Express power connectors are used (6-pin and 8-pin sockets). This is the same configuration used by previous dual-GPU graphics cards such as the GeForce 9800 GX2 and Radeon HD 4870 X2, so current high-end power supplies should cater for this new graphics card.

The Radeon HD 5970 naturally supports CrossfireX technology, and therefore in the standard position we find a single connector for bridging two cards together.

The only other connectors can be found on the I/O panel. Our sample featured two dual-DVI connectors and a Mini Display Port connection. Just like the Radeon HD 5870, the 5970 can support a maximum resolution of 2560x1600 on not one but rather three monitors.

Mobile : LG GD510 Pop & HTC HD2 Details

It shows how far the mobile world has come when even the most budget-friendly phones can pack some touchscreen action. We’ve seen a few devices try and go down the smartphone route on the cheap (the HTC Tattoo) and some offering bog-standard touch at rock-bottom prices (Orange Vegas we are looking at you), but LG’s latest money friendly endeavour, the LG Pop, tries to bridge the gap between price and functionality.

Popping on to the scene for a snip under £100, the LG GD510 Pop has a surprising amount of decent features on offer. On-board there’s a 3.2-megapixel camera, a 3-inch WQVGA screen, wireless FM radio and expandable MicroSD memory.

But it’s also surprising the lack of features it houses, some that you’ve come to expect on even the most standard of devices –3G and to a lesser extent Wi-Fi are both missing in action. Size-wise the phone is the Kylie of the mobile world: small but perfectly formed.

Size matters

While it measures a mere 97.8 x 49.5 x 11.2mm, it does boast the biggest touchscreen on a phone this size, something that will come as relief to those with fumble fingers. In an attempt to make things as simple as possible, real buttons are scarce. What you get is three in all: one on the Pop’s front which acts as a home screen button; one on the side of the handset which, when pressed, transports you to your favourite apps and also moonlights as the shutter button for the phone’s camera; and finally there’s one on top which powers the GD510 down.

The main interface of the Pop is an interesting one. You can cram it as much as you want with widgets available on the phone. If the UI looks to be getting a bit cluttered, then shake you’re the Pop to align them. It’s a great little feature which gives the phone a bit of character.

Those who have played with the LG Cookie will be right at home with the Pop. Like the Cookie, default widgets on the homepage include a clock, calendar and access to this internet – although all of these can be toggled to your specs. Flick the screen to the left and you will notice that there are two more ‘home’ screens to add things to. One of these is for your contacts, while the other can be an extension of your original homepage. This is where the Pop shows off its true colours. With access here to avatars for your contacts and even a virtual farmyard, LG is definitely pitching the phone at younger social-networkers.

Being a budget-friendly device means that the phone’s touchscreen is a bit of a ’mare to use. The resistive touch is sluggish and accessing widgets took longer than expected to open. Sometimes it did take two to three attempts to perform a task which was a tad annoying.

Handy features do keep popping up to make you think the device is offering more than its budget price suggests. Things like the Status Summary page, which points out how much battery memory you have left is great, and from here you can also toggle Bluetooth on and off.

Pop tart or pop star?

Drill into the phone a bit more and it does become apparent that what you are using is a low-end device. Opening up and playing songs and movies is far too sluggish for our liking and while it’s great there’s an on-board camera and camcorder the footage you get from both doesn’t exactly set the world on fire. It’s a shame the phone wasn’t smarter as there’s a mountain of features available. With around 32 apps to choose from, the phone is perfectly packed to make your on-the-go life that little bit easier.

In the end, the LG GD510 Pop teases you with the amount of features it’s got but never really delivers. It’s great for those who have never tested the touchscreen waters before but those who can spot a resistive screen from 12 paces may want to look elsewhere.

The HD2 is also the first time HTC has used the Sense UI outside of the Android range, bringing with the likes of integrated Facebook status to your contacts and a Twitter client directly on the home screen.

In practice Sense on a WinMo phone is actually more of a mashup between HTC’s standard TouchFLO interface, seen on the likes of the HTC Diamond, and Sense, with elements like full screen weather updates and the tabbed homescreen browsing allowing a huge amount of information from the swipe of a finger.

And that finger swipe is a real pleasure - it’s easily as good as the iPhone, with every brush of the screen registering correctly.

We mentioned before that this phone makes Windows Mobile look like a good OS, and that’s not to say it’s terrible usually - there’s a lot of power behind it, but a poor user interface usually hides that behind a kaleidoscope of frustration.

Not so here - with HTC’s messaging widgets, email and texting is super easy to set up and even easier to read - simply flick through a pile of messages to see what’s been going on.

Media has also been improved for the HD2, and shows the power of the Snapdragon processor under the hood of the phone. Flicking through album covers to change songs is a dream, and when you turn the phone on its side, the system automatically moves in to Coverflow mode, and skimming through the pictures is thoroughly devoid of slow down.

Video is less appealing, which is a shame given the huge screen. It’s not bad to watch (and there’s always the irritating mobile version of Windows Media Player if you want it all in one place) but finding your way to your favourite movie is a convoluted process. You either have to scroll through all photos and videos you’ve taken before you get to it, or have to go through two separate album menus to get to the videos on your phone memory / memory card.

Video looks good enough in playback though, and the sensitivity of the screen means that scrolling backwards and forwards to find a certain point is very easy indeed.

Internet on the HD2 is also very good, although the functionality is divided over two built-in browsers. For Flash video, you’ll have to use Microsoft’s Internet Explorer - for pinch and zoom web browsing, you’re going to have to go with the default Opera browser.

But both offer a slick experience thanks to the uber processor and sensitive touchscreen, and saving relevant pages is nice and easy too.

As you can imagine, one of the strengths of Windows Mobile is its messaging prowess, and it shows that off well in the HD2. You can sync up to 10 email addresses into the phone, either from Exchange or IMAP and POP3, and all of them work on a push basis (providing, in the case of something like Google Mail) you have them correctly synced to the phone).

Typing messages is not such a fun experience though, as the Windows Mobile confusion shines through once more. The ‘Send’ key is located scarily close to the comma button, so on more than one occasion we ended up sending a message halfway through writing.

And while we’re talking about things that don’t really work that well, the camera could do with a bit of an upgrade too. While there are a huge amount of setting to play with, pictures still come out lacking detail and colour on most occasions, and the dual LED flash is brighter than the surface of the sun.

This means detail is not just washed out, but obliterated like a nuclear blast on many pictures. In fact this feature is only useful to scare your friends with how bright it gets.

6. Heat shrink tubing
7. 9 Volt battery
8. Small Camcorder

Steps

First trim back the molding on the camera to reveal the wiring. Kip's camera had 4 wires. 1 for Video, Audio, Power and ground. cut the wiring about 4 inches from the camera, keep the cut wires. You'll need them later

Now you want to add about three feet of wiring to the wires still connected to the camera. After marking what each line is, solder one length of wire to each of the 4 cut lines coming from the camera. Add some shrink tubing and then solder the other ends of the new wire to the connector end.

Install the newly wired camera in a far corner of your wraparound sunglasses and secure with hot glue. Clean the glasses before you install the camera because you are not going to be able to access the lens area again once installed.

Then secure the wiring along the arm of the glasses.

Connect the camera to a recording device. Kip used a small camcorder with A/V inputs.

Add the 9 volt battery clip and you are ready to shoot some spy footage!

Scientists identify host factors critical to dengue virus infection

By painstakingly silencing genes one at a time, scientists at Duke University Medical Center have identified dozens of proteins the dengue fever virus depends upon to grow and spread among mosquitoes and humans.
The research, appearing in the April 23 issue of the journal Nature, opens the door to new ways to potentially prevent or treat the disease, which infects millions of people around the globe every year.

Dengue fever is a mosquito-borne illness that can cause debilitating sickness and death. According to the World Health Organization, almost half the people in the world are vulnerable to the dengue virus. Public health officials are worried because dengue appears to be popping up in places where it has rarely appeared before and there is some concern that current epidemics are may be fueled by global warming.

"Dengue is a nasty disease, and right now, there is no treatment for it and no way to prevent it," says Mariano Garcia-Blanco, M.D., Ph.D., professor of molecular genetics and microbiology at Duke University Medical Center and senior author of the study. "But if we can find a weakness in the virus, we can design a strategy to fight it. This study has helped us identify some gaps in dengue's armor."

Garcia-Blanco, who is also professor of emerging infectious diseases at the Duke-NUS Graduate Medical School in Singapore, used RNA interference (RNAi) to unlock dengue's secrets. RNA interference is a normal biological process cells use to turn gene expression on or off depending upon which gene products, or proteins, are needed at any given moment. "That very same system proved to be the perfect investigative tool for our study," says Garcia-Blanco.

Garcia-Blanco and colleagues in Duke's RNAi facility were able to knock down gene function in fruit fly cells infected with a strain of the dengue virus known as DENV-2. Silencing one gene at a time (there were about 14,000 of them) allowed researchers to pinpoint which genes, or host factors, were essential to viral growth and which ones were not. They used fruit flies as a model because the genetic tools needed for the same work in mosquitoes have not been developed yet.

The process yielded 116 host factors that appeared to be important to successful dengue infection in fruit flies. In testing several of these host factors in mosquitoes at Johns Hopkins University, researchers subsequently discovered that at least one - and possibly a second - was necessary for dengue infection to occur in the insects.

Scientists also infected human cells with the DENV-2 virus and found 82 of the mosquito genes had analogous genes in humans. About half that number turned out to be dengue-specific host factors important in human infection.

"Each one of these newly identified host factors is a potential therapeutic target that could be used to block or slow dengue infection," says Garcia-Blanco. Currently, there are no vaccines to prevent the disease, "so new ways to fight the disease are important," he added. There are a couple of dengue vaccine candidates in development.

Scientists say the study reflects the value of the growing research partnership between Duke University Medical Center and the two-year old Duke-NUS Graduate Medical School in Singapore. Since opening its doors to its first class of medical students in 2007, the Duke-NUS Graduate Medical School has attracted some of the top students and scientists from around the world. Garcia-Blanco says Singapore's critical mass of knowledge about dengue was key to the success of the current study.

"I like to say that my research is a tale of two islands. I was born in Puerto Rico, where dengue thrives, but Singapore is my classroom. The faculty there has nurtured my enthusiasm for virology and given me the intellectual support to translate their knowledge about dengue into application in Duke's laboratories, where the RNAi studies were done. Each of us needs the other in this venture, and we are hoping this partnership continues."

Lightest mobile phone

The world’s lightest mobile phone is the modu, which weights 40.1 g. It is manufactured by modu of Israel and was launched at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona on February 11 2008. The modu is just 72.1 mm tall, 37.6 mm wide and 7.8 mm thick. It has a full-colour screen and 1 GB of internal memory for music and photos.

Best-selling smartphone

According to analyst firm iSuppli, the original Apple iPhone outsold all other models of smartphone in the USA in July 2007, its first full month on sale. In the last four months of last year, Apple sold 2,315,000 iPhones, making the iPhone the fastest-selling smartphone yet. "Records are being broken all the time," says Craig Glenday, editor of Guinness World Records. "And the iPhone is the nicest, sexiest bit of kit out there."

In 1985, Nintendo released Super Mario Bros on the NES console. The game’s large, complex scrolling levels changed 2D platformers forever and it remains the best-selling video game of all time, with over 40 million copies sold. "It has that kind of unending appeal," says Craig Glenday, editor of Guinness World Records. "It's somehow reassuring that all these oldies and classics are still with us."

Most-played online game

Since January 21 2008, Call of Duty 4 has been the most played Xbox Live game, according to unique user statistics, consistently beating Halo 3 into second place with more than 1.3 million people playing the game daily. High figures are also reported for the PlayStation 3 edition of the game. "Everyone has this idea that the most-played online game is World of Warcraft," Guinness World Records editor Craig Glenday told Tech & Gadgets. "But the amount of variation in Call of Duty 4… makes it the record holder."

Strongest genetically modified mouse

The tobacco plant could soon redeem itself in the eyes of public health experts, say scientists who are producing huge amounts of a powerful but prohibitively expensive HIV drug inside modified tobacco leaves.

"This is very significant news," said Polly Harrison, Director of the Alliance for Microbicide Development, who was not involved with the research.

"So often it's difficult to make enough of a promising drug to even do laboratory studies, but here production is at a level that allows them to literally make tons of the drug," said Harrison.

Scientists have known for years that the drug, known as griffithsin, protects some people from HIV infection by stopping the virus from colonizing the vaginal lining.

What has prevented griffithsin from becoming a standard HIV preventive measure is the cost of producing it.

The only known naturally occurring source of griffithsin is a red algae found off the coast of New Zealand, which grows in amounts too small to be effectively harvested.

Scientists can produce larger amounts of griffithsin by genetically engineering E. coli bacteria to produce the drug, but maintaining the necessarily high temperatures, supplying the raw materials, and harvesting the drug is expensive.

Now scientists have turned to a virus, the tobacco mosaic virus (TMV), that commonly infects tobacco plants.

TMV is rod-shaped, about 18 nanometers wide by 200 to 300 nanometers long. Once the virus enters a plant cell, it hijacks the cell's molecular machinery. Usually the hijacked plant cells are reprogrammed to produce more virus.

The scientists first mail-ordered a synthetic version of the red algae gene that produces griffithsin. They then injected that gene into the TMV, mixed it with water, and sprayed the virus over a greenhouse field of eight-inch-tall Nicotiana benthamiana, a close cousin of commercial tobacco plants that is especially susceptible to TMV.

After a few days the leaves of infected plants began to wilt. The scientists harvested the plants by hand and processed them to extract the griffithsin.

The research is published in this week's edition of the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences

The most effective way griffithsin can prevent HIV infection is in a vaginal cream applied before sex, said Kenneth Palmer, a researcher at Owensboro Cancer Research Program who was the corresponding author on the study.

A cigarette containing griffithsin hasn't been discounted either, said Palmer.

Tobacco-derived griffithsin in a gel has already been tested in both mice and in the cells of women who have had their cervix removed. In both cases the griffithsin stopped all HIV transmission without any toxic side effects and without any sign of inflammation or irritation.

The researchers hope to begin phase one FDA clinical trials of the microbicide gel within a year.

A next-generation Human Papilloma Virus (HPV) vaccine, also produced inside Nicotiana benthamiana, is already scheduled for clinical trials later this year.

Swiss researchers test high-speed WLAN network

According to the communication theory, only a limited amount of data can be transmitted within a given bandwidth for wireless communication. Ever since these limits were revealed 60 years ago, we have been trying to reach the boundaries determined by physics as efficiently as possible. In light of the growing significance of cellular phone networks and WLAN connections, scientists are seeking new ways to transfer more data than ever before – after all, transmission capacities are in short supply and, therefore, a valuable commodity.
Thanks to so-called MIMO technology, which stands for “Multiple Input Multiple Output”, it is possible for several transceivers to communicate with each other on the same bandwidth at the same time. Transceivers have several antennas. “It is as if several people are communicating with several other people”, explains Helmut Bölcskei, profes-sor at the Communications Technology Laboratory at ETH Zurich. “At face value, it just seems like an incomprehensible babble. If the listeners skillfully combine the hubbub, however, they can filter out the original messages.” In terms of wireless communication, this means you can transfer far more information than with existing procedures.

ETH Zurich researchers had already furnished proof that MIMO technology works in a similar test facility three years ago – albeit with only one user. However, until recently it was still unclear as to whether and how the increase in capacity could be implemented in complex networks with several users. This is the aim of the European research pro-ject “MASCOT” (Multiple-Access Space-Time Coding Testbed), in which ETH Zurich is involved with its Communications Technology Laboratory and Integrated Systems Labo-ratory. It was with this in mind that the prototype developed at these two institutes was enhanced.

For the first time, the Zurich-based researchers were able to demonstrate that the principle of multiple antenna systems is actually feasible for use in complex wireless net-works both theoretically and using their test facility. In doing so, they succeeded in constructing a compact multi-user system, currently with three stations in a bench scale, where every station transmits or receives via four antennae. This meant that the utiliza-tion of the frequency range for each of the three users could be up to four times higher than with present-day WLAN networks.

One crucial point of the research project was the development of procedures to unscramble the jumble of signals in the receiver as efficiently as possible. This presented the researchers with a problem: the more antennas and participants the system has, the more data that can in principle be transmitted; however, this also means that its demodulation is all the more difficult. As the antennas are meant to be installed in inexpensively manufactured equipment, the signals have to be decoded with as inexpensive a chip as possible, i.e. a small one. The smaller the chip, however, the smaller its computational power.

Thanks to a deeper understanding of the theoretical principles of multi-antenna systems, the researchers were able to develop efficient decoding algorithms that require a much smaller chip area. The receivers developed at ETH Zurich are currently so efficient that the new MIMO technology can easily be installed in commercially available laptops and WLAN stations.

It may be some time before MIMO technology is used in cellular phones as the antennas on hand to date require a certain distance for reliable data transfer. Consequently, the antennas have to be improved first.

ETH Zurich researchers used the real-time demonstrator of a MIMO WLAN network to test the practicality of their theoretical algorithms under real conditions. The test envi-ronment currently consists of 3 stations, each equipped with four antennas to transmit or receive. This enables the overall data rate of 54 Mbps (megabits per second) in modern WLAN systems to be increased to up to 216 Mbps with only one antenna for each station.

Lets face it, the outer look or design of a cellphone can no longer get any more special. Perhaps adding a little transparency to the design of a cellphone will make it more special and outstanding in the crowd. That’s what LG has made for its new phone, LG-GD900.

The LG-GD900 was shown at the WMC 2009 as well, which is a crystal-like phone that you can see through. This phone’s keypad is translucent, and it has a polished silver body. When the keypad slides open, the phone will light up in a cool glow in a reflective and refractive way. Apparently, the LG-GD900 transparent phone is the next move of LG, hoping to add little revolutionizing tech to the mobile phone industry, after the 3G watch phone.

The LG-GD900 transparent phone can be expected to arrive in the 2nd quarter of 2009. No much information about this phone has been disclosed yet. The aerodynamic design reduces fuel consumption. The driver sits in an aeroplane-style cockpit and controls the vehicle using a joystick and video cameras instead of a steering wheel and mirrors.

The Colani Truck – another Luigi Colani design – sticks to his ethics of "biodesign", looking "to the superiority of nature for the solutions".By tinkering with a Mercedes-Benz engine and working on the aerodynamics of the truck, Colani was able to reduce fuel consumption by 30 per cent, he says.

Designed by Haishan Deng, the Chameleon Truck would change its shape to fit its cargo, thus reducing inefficiency when not carrying a full load.
The truck can "swallow" its load by driving over it and then loading itself, reducing the time taken and the extra vehicles needed for loading conventional trucks.
A soft fabric shell contains the load and reduces weight. The shell also adds safety and absorbs impact in the case of a crash or collision.

Unveiled in March, the Daimler Innovation Truck is built on an aluminium chassis, a feature already available in other Daimler trucks.
Rear-wheel fairings smooth the airflow around the wheels, and under-body panels do the same job under the chassis.
A roof deflector directs air over the trailer, and an air splitter has been incorporated into the front bumper to pass air around the truck.

The Renault Radiance's exterior has been shaped to improve aerodynamics.
The front end includes large air inlets for cooling an engine that is more powerful, quieter and cleaner than its predecessors.
Video "mirrors" replace traditional mirrors, and a proposed electronic "steer-by-wire" system is intended to reduce danger in a crash.

The Hybrys is a second concept truck from Renault. It uses hybrid engine technology for better fuel economy.
The Hybrys is designed for urban transport, particularly waste collection, and can be fitted with an electric engine or a diesel/electric hybrid engine.

Making of Bosnian Bread (Traditional)

Ok, so this is the bread that my mom and I always make, as far as I know it is pretty much the standard recipe for bread in most Bosnian homes, give or take a few variations.

Oh, and by the way, if you follow the recipe carefuly you should end up with really delicious bread.

WHITE BREAD RECIPE

2 tbsp yeast
1 1/2 cups warm water
2 tbsp sugar
1 tbsp salt
6 cups or more of white flour
vegetable/olive oil for pan

First, combine the salt and flour in a large bowl; in a smaller bowl, sprinkle the yeast on top of the 1 1/2 cups of warm water, now sprinkle the sugar on top of the yeast, let it all disolve and rise. Mix all ingredients to a smooth dough by kneading by hand for aproximately 5-10 min, add extra water or flour if you need to, place in a greased bowl and cover with a clean cloth. Let rise to the brim of the bowl one or two times (or overnight for sourdough bread). Cut up the dough into equal amounts and shape into loaves, sprinkle with flower. Place the loaves onto lightly greased pan(s). Let rise one more time for just a half hour or so. Bake 350-400F for about 1 hr or untill the inside of the bread is done.

Radar technology can be used to stop bird strikes!!

March 2, 2009 -- The story is now legendary: bird strikes caused both engines to fail on U.S. Airways Flight 1549 on Jan. 15, 2009, sending it to a watery landing in the Hudson River. Everyone on board survived.
Now officials at DeTect Inc. and the U.S. Air Force say that bird detecting radar technology available today could have prevented, or at least lowered the chance, of a bird strike bringing down the flight.

"We have the technology to ensure that bird strikes don't happen as often," said Ron Merritt of DeTect Inc., a company marketing bird- detecting radar systems to airports. "We hope that the benefits of this technology will arrive from [the interest in the Miracle on the Hudson] instead of lawsuits."

Bird detecting radar is based on the same physics used to watch air planes; radio waves travel into the atmosphere and bounce back when they encounter an object. Older radar systems use longer radio waves, good for detecting large objects like planes, but not so great at detecting smaller objects, like birds.

Today, bird monitoring largely consists of someone armed with binoculars scanning the horizon. The system works well on sunny days, but at night or during foggy periods there are obvious problems.

Newer radar systems, like the one being tested by DeTect Inc. and others use radio waves 10 centimeters (3.9 inches) long, small enough to see planes and birds of all size and number.

DeTect's bird detection radar consists of two sets of radar mounted on a medium truck trailer. One set gives a 360 degree view of bird activity. The other radar unit is tilted on its side and usually aligned with a runway to determine bird elevation.

The bird's location can then be sent to a person on the ground to scare birds away before they near an airfield, or could be radioed to pilots so they could change their flight path or take other actions to avoid the animals.

One place you won't immediately see the information going is into civilian aircraft control towers. All equipment in control towers must be approved by the Federal Aviation Administration, which is currently testing the equipment.The U.S. Air Force is allowed non-FAA approved equipment in their control towers however, because a special officer, the Supervisor of Flying, is authorized to receive such information, said Eugene LeBeouf, the Chief of the USAF Bird/Wildlife Aircraft Strike Hazard Team.

The U.S. Air Force is currently testing bird strike radar systems at four airports and one bombing range. Each radar unit gathers data about a different aspect of bird and aircraft interactions, from individual starlings to flocks of Canada geese around low level bombing runs to high altitude dog fights.

Using the data gathered from these five bird radar units, the USAF wants to develop a handbook, for how pilots and airports can most effectively use bird strike radar.

Bird strike radar is estimated to cost about $300,000 to $500,000 for each unit. Merritt claims that by reducing the number of bird strikes by even 10 percent will pay back the cost of the radar system. DeTect Inc. claims that its radar system can reduce bird strikes by up to 80 percent.

Officials and both DeTect Inc. and the USAF say that bird strike radar can't prevent all bird strikes. Birds are simply too good at flying, able to perform maneuvers and change course much more quickly that any human-controlled aircraft.

"Birds can do a lot of things that we are still learning how to do," said LeBeouf. "They wrote the book on flying, we are just poor students."

Western Digital Caviar Green 2TB WD20EADS

First benchmark tests of Western Digital's 2TB hard drive reveal this model offers competitive performance.

The Western Digital Caviar Green 2TB WD20EADS hard drive boosts the capacity game to a whole new level. This $299 drive crams 2 terabytes into a single drive--making this drive a boon to anyone with a large data archive, multimedia library, or space-hogging video collection.
We've used words like gargantuan and massive before to describe the capacity of a hard-disk drive, but this model blows all other examples away. Western Digital is the first drive maker to achieve 2TB in one drive. The previous top honors for capacity went to the Seagate Barracuda 7200.11 1.5TB drive.

This capacious internal drive provides an areal density of 400 gigabits per square inch on four 500GB platters. The drive is also part of WD's Green Power line of hard disk drives, billed as environmentally friendly drives due to their lower power consumption.

In our PC World Test Center benchmarks, the 2TB drive came in fifth place among all drives tested--one better than its nearest-capacity competitor, Seagate's Barracuda 7200.11 1.5TB. Its performance was above average and bettered that of its sibling, the Caviar Green 1TB WD10EACS, which finished ninth overall in our performance tests.

This model lagged behind our performance leaders (the Western Digital RE3 Enterprise 500GB and the WD VelociRaptor) on some results--most notably, the write-intensive disk imaging test that we perform as part of PC WorldBench 6. On other core metrics, though, the 2TB drive performed very competitively. For example, it completed our "write files and folders" test in 112 seconds and our "write large files" test in 92 seconds. On each of those tests, its results were off those of our performance leaders by a dozen seconds or less.

The 2TB drive has several WD technologies inside that the company says enable this model to achieve its balance of price and performance. StableTrac reduces vibration by securing the motor shaft at both ends, and this in turn permits accurate head tracking during read and write operations. IntelliPower, according to WD, adjusts the balance of spin speed, transfer rate, and caching algorithms for optimal balance between performance and power consumption. IntelliSeek optimizes seek speeds to enable lower power consumption, noise, and vibration. And WD's NoTouch ramp-load technology keeps the recording head from touching the disk media.

The storage fiend in me salivates at the thought of 2TB in a single 3.5-inch hard-disk drive. Such a high ceiling on capacity means that I no longer need to make choices about where I'm storing my data; instead, I can better organize and consolidate my data across multiple subjects. But even though I like the idea of consolidating my data under a single roof, I shudder to think what the costs to recover a ginormous 2TB drive might be if anything should go amiss.

I also admit that, at first blush, the 2TB model's $299 price tag gives me pause. That is, until I realized that its $.15 per gigabyte cost is actually fairly competitive with that of other drives on the market; the only difference is that this particular drive's supersize capacity skews the upfront costs accordingly.

The slight lag in performance shouldn't be enough to deter people who have large data libraries from getting the WD Caviar Green 2TB WD20EADS. Nor should it put off casual and professional digital media enthusiasts, who will rightly crave this drive. For these audiences, the price and performance tradeoffs are a small price to pay for the honor of packing a 2TB drive inside.

Logitech G19 Gaming Keyboard

Features & Specifications
The Logitech G19 supports both Windows and Mac computers. The most obvious feature of the keyboard is the large 320 x 240 resolution LCD that can be used to display many different types of content. The keys are backlit and 12 fully programmable keys are included for recording macros and more. The keyboard supports multiple key presses at once with up to five simultaneous presses being supported. Other features include a pair of USB ports on the top edge of the G19, instant multimedia keys, and cable routing on the underside of the keyboard.

In Use
The first thing you notice about the Logitech G19 is the large LCD screen. The G15 had an LCD screen in both of the iterations of the keyboard. The first G15 had an angle adjustable screen and the second version had a fixed screen that didn't move. The big difference between the G15 screen and the screen on the new G19 is that the G19 has a full color screen. The screen can be used to show game stats, computer information, VOIP data, video, images, and other things. If you set the screen up for showing image slideshows, it's very much like a digital photo frame.

One of the things that many gamers desire in a gaming keyboard is macro recording capability. Gamers who play MMORPG games like World of Warcraft have attacks that feature lots of key presses that take time to execute. Using the G keys on the Logitech G19 these players can bind up to 36 single key presses or macros to the twelve programmable keys to be executed from a single button press. The macros are easy to record during the game by pressing the MR key, the button you want to bind the macro to and performing your macro.

Another requirement on any gaming keyboard is that the Windows key can be disabled to prevent closing your game window at bad times, the G19 has this feature. The two USB ports on top of the keyboard are good for connecting flash drives and similar items. You can charge your iPhone from the ports as well. The keyboard also has a full feature of media controls including a spinning wheel that controls volume. An array of Vista keys are included offering access to gadgets and more.

Typing feel on the keyboard is exactly like the feel of the G15 I have used for a long time. Tactile feel is very good and the keys offer good typing feel. The typing feel isn’t as good as the Logitech illuminated keyboard that I use all the time, but the G19 is a good keyboard that can be used for gaming and general computer use as well. The backlighting color is user selectable and is uniformly lit.

The only downside to the sweet LCD on the G19 is that it needs its own power brick to operate. That means that the precious AC outlets near your gaming rig will have more devices vying for power. The little screen is good for all sorts of things from watching streaming video to viewing game stats on compatible titles. I was surprised at how smoothly the video played on the little LCD. The screen is a bit small, but anyone accustomed to watching video on an MP3 player or their iPhone will not feel uncomfortable watching on the screen.

Growing flowers on the Moon: Possible or Impossible?

A team of scientists associated with the European Space Agency (ESA) has claimed that they are convinced that marigolds can grow in crushed rock similar to the lunar surface, with no need for plant food.

The new research by European Space Agency�s scientists was presented at the meeting of the European Geosciences Union (EGU) meeting held in Vienna, Austria. This is the largest annual European congregation of scientists who study the Earth, its climate and Earth�s neighbours in space.

While some experts look at growing plants on the Moon as a step towards human habitation, a senior official of the European Space Agency remarked that the �concept is not an official aim of ESA� and dismissed the idea of growing plants on the Moon as �science fiction.�

Bernard Foing, a senior scientist with the European Space Research and Technology Centre (Estec) in the Netherlands, was quoted by BBC as saying, �I believe that growing plants on the Moon would be a useful as a tool to learn how life adapts to lunar conditions, and as a practical aid to establishing manned bases. We would bring a system of water circulation and recovery, which is also the type of system that in any case you want to develop when you are going to manufacture a primitive sort of life support system. So it is also a kind of �technological breadboard� for maintaining a simple life form in an extreme environment.�

The scientists of the European Space Agency believe the next step is to eliminate the need for bringing nutrients and soil from Earth.

In a previous experiment, a team of researchers led by Natasha Kozyrovska and Iryna Zaetz from the National Academy of Sciences in Kiev, capital of Ukraine, had planted marigolds in crushed anorthosite, a type of rock found on Earth which is very similar to much of the lunar surface. In neat anorthosite, the plants fared very badly, but adding different types of bacteria made them thrive � the bacteria seemed to draw elements from the rock that the plants needed, such as potassium.

Bernard Foing, who presented the study at the European Geosciences Union meeting, told BBC that �there is no reason in principle why the same idea could not bear fruit on the Moon itself. Tools could crush lunar rock and add bacteria and seeds.�

However, Foing added, scientists needed to go further, by choosing plants or bacteria that are especially well adapted to lunar conditions, or even by genetically engineering new strains.

Close all open programs.

Go to the Processes tab and End Process on Explorer.exe.

Leave Task Manager open.

Go back to the Command Prompt window and change to the directory the AVI (or other undeletable file) is located in.

Go back to Task Manager, click File, New Task and enter EXPLORER.EXE to restart the GUI shell.

Close Task Manager.

Or you can try this

Open Notepad.exe

Click File>Save As..>

locate the folder where ur undeletable file is

Choose 'All files' from the file type box

click once on the file u wanna delete so its name appears in the 'filename' box

put a " at the start and end of the filename

(the filename should have the extension of the undeletable file so it will overwrite it)

click save,

It should ask u to overwrite the existing file, choose yes and u can delete it as normal

Here's a manual way of doing it. I'll take this off once you put into your first post zain.

1. Start
2. Run
3. Type: command
4. To move into a directory type: cd c:\*** (The stars stand for your folder)
5. If you cannot access the folder because it has spaces for example Program Files or Kazaa Lite folder you have to do the following. instead of typing in the full folder name only take the first 6 letters then put a ~ and then 1 without spaces. Example: cd c:\progra~1\kazaal~1
6. Once your in the folder the non-deletable file it in type in dir - a list will come up with everything inside.
7. Now to delete the file type in del ***.bmp, txt, jpg, avi, etc... And if the file name has spaces you would use the special 1st 6 letters followed by a ~ and a 1 rule. Example: if your file name was bad file.bmp you would type once in the specific folder thorugh command, del badfil~1.bmp and your file should be gone. Make sure to type in the correct extension.

Create an Invisible folder : no name no folder

This is a pretty gud trick when you want to prevent someone viewing your personal files. (particularly useful when u have an external HDD...)

Aim is to create an invisible folder..

Create a new folder by right clicking on the window area of explorer and select new folder.

Now, Name the folder as

Hold ALT and press 0 1 6 0 on numpad consecutively and then release ALT.

This will create a blank ASCII character. Now, we also make the folder icon invisible. for doing this...

Right Click on the folder and select properties

browse to Customize tab nD Click on Change Icon. Select the blank icon available in shell32.dll looking at the image below.

lol...u might find the invisible icons from the list :)

You are done.. Neither the folder icon nor the folder name is visible...

Nano 3000 Series processors "O.o" by VIA

VIA has announced its new Nano 3000 Series processors, which are said to offer enhanced digital media performance and less power consumption for ultrathin notebooks and all-in-one desktops. The new line brings strong competition to Intel's Atom CPU, and consists of six 64-bit Isaiah-based chips.

VIA's Nano 3000 processors are clocked between 1GHz and 2GHz with an 800MHz FSB, and feature SSE4 instructions, hardware virtualization, and Windows 7 and Linux compatibility. Along with being 20% more power efficient than current-gen Nano processors, they are also said to be capable of delivering 20% more performance, and are able to play 1080p video.

The latest Nano chips use the same NanoBGA2 package, which should allow hardware vendors to easily upgrade existing systems. Samples are currently available for OEMs and motherboard vendors, and mass production will begin in the first quarter of next year.

First USB 3.0 motherboard introduced by Asustek

Asus Wednesday unveiled the first motherboard to support SuperSpeed USB. SuperSpeed USB, also known as USB 3.0, boasts transfer rates of up to 10 times faster than what users can expect with USB 2.0.

The Asus Xtreme Design P7DP55DE-E Premium packs two USB 3.0 ports and, given that the motherboard uses Intel's P55 Express Chipset, which doesn't even support USB 3.0, it's not surprising to learn some folk were a little confused when they first heard the news. However, Asus has enlisted the help of a third party controller, which makes for a pretty handy workaround.

Aside from the two USB 3.0 ports, the Xtreme Design P7DP55DE-E Premium has 10 USB 2.0 ports, six 3GB per second SATA ports, two 6GB per second SATA ports, two PCIe x16 graphic card slots and two Gigabit Ethernet ports.

Reach Run quickly

Here's a quicker way to reach the Run dialog box, if you don't want to go through the Start menu. Just hit the Windows key + R.

Looking for a better screen font display?

Enable ClearType, Microsoft's trademark font display technology, for a drastic improvement in screen font rendering. Right-click anywhere on your desktop. Now select Properties. Under the Appearance tab, click Effects. Check the box for Use the following method to smooth edges of screen fonts, and in the drop-down menu, select ClearType. Press OK, and apply the change.

Change your mouse pointer scheme

Bored of the same old arrow? To change your mouse pointer scheme, in the Control Panel, select Mouse and go to the Pointers tab. Scroll through the available schemes, pick one that you like and click Apply.

Check that your Windows Firewall is turned on

To make sure your Windows Firewall hasn't been accidentally disabled, go to your Control Panel and click Windows Firewall. Make sure the radio button for On (recommended) is selected. Instantly activate your screensaver

Change the look of folder icons

Display album art in your music folder thumbnails

If your music files are in WMA format, XP automatically picks up the album art and displays it, both in the folder thumbnail as well as in the Windows Media Player display. If your files are in MP3 format, you can download the album art from the Internet and then customize each folder to display it. But this takes a lot of time. A faster way around is to save each image as 'folder.jpg' and put it in the correct folder. Once you do this, XP will pick up that image and use it as the thumbnail for the folder, and also use the image to display in Windows Media Player while playing songs from the album.

How to stop Windows Media Player from accessing your information

You may be uncomfortable with the idea of Windows Media Player collecting your information and sending it to various websites. You can stop this. Go to the Tools menu of Windows Media Player. Opening folders with a single click

Making web pages available offline

Man who didnt bath for 35 years!!

Kailash ‘Kalau’ Singh is from the village of Chatav outside the holy city of Varanasi. He is 63-years-old and the father of seven daughters. He has gone for 35 years without bathing apparently in an attempt to have a son. Read about it below and see his photo.

One of Singh’s neighbors, Madhusudan, says that a seer told Kalau years ago that if he didn’t take a bath, he would be blessed with a male child. It seems that many Indians prefer sons for financial reasons. Sons are breadwinners. Girls have to have the matrimonial dowry for the grooms family when they marry. Also, in Indian culture, all their earnings go to their husband’s family. For those reasons, girl children are considered a burden.

So for 35 years Singh hasn’t bathed. It appears his efforts are not working so far.

This has been costly for him. He used to own a grocery store, but had to go out of business when customers quit coming to his store because of his ‘unhealthy personality’. He now works in the fields. He also incurred the anger of his family when he refused to take a ritual dip in the river Ganges even after the death of his brother five years ago.

In spite of what his neighbors have said, Kalau claims he doesn’t remember how it all began. He claims his pledge to not wash is in the ‘national interest’. ‘I’ll end this vow only when all problems confronting the nation end,’ he said.

Even though he refuses to take water baths, he does take fire baths. That involves standing on one leg next to a bonfire, smoking marijuana and saying prayers to Lord Shiva. He claims its just as good as using water to bath and the fire kills germs and infection in the body.

Oh, and he doesn’t brush his teeth either.

Considering this whole scenario its not surprising that he hasn’t had a male child. The surprising thing is that he’s had any children at all.

"Sandbox third person shooter/action game" is a mouthful. Let me instead suggest an alternate label for Just Cause 2 the effectively sums up the experience: "BASE-jumping, grapple hook parachuting with guns."

Not that there's anything wrong with the sandbox third person shooter/action game label; it certainly does sum up both Just Cause 2 and its 2006 predecessor. But with sequels, you're expecting something more, right? Well, Just Cause 2 delivers – in parachute and grappling hook form.

What Is It?
Just Cause 2 puts players in the shoes of Agency operative Rico Rodriguez who is sent to track down his AWOL friend and mentor, Tom Sheldon on the fictional island of Panau. Along the way, he gets enmeshed in conflicts between three different factions and there are a lot of high places that are just begging to be BASE-jumped off of.

What We Saw
I watched a developer recap the demo shown at E3 where Rico BASE jumps into a speedboat and then goes crazy grappling between points on what looks like a shipping port. Then the dev took me and several other games journalists through the beginning of the Casino Bust mission before handing over the controller so I could try my hand at playing in the sandbox.

How Far Along Is It?
The game is due out sometime in 2010, but it looks pretty enough to seem like the release could be sooner rather than later.

What Needs Improvement?
Wait, What Was I Doing? It's awfully easy to get distracted by the pretty scenery and raw freedom offered up by Just Cause 2. You do get map notifications of where you can go to complete the next objective on whatever question you might be on – and sometimes cell phone updates from non-playable characters who want you to do something. But the map is easy ignore since you have to open a menu to view it properly. Also the cell phone pep talks are jarring enough to be irritating, so you might tune them out. It'd be nice if the game sent your PDA unobtrusive text messages or something.

Where Am I?
Panau feels huge. I'm not sure how it stacks up compared to the first game, but the square mileage of the island is supposed to be something like 400 square miles. With all the ground to cover and topography that makes it hard to scan for landmarks, it's easy to get lost. You might not mind it much if you're an intrepid explorer – but if you're one of those gotta-beat-main-story-now types, getting lost while trying to learn the lay of the land is going to be a huge drag.

You Can't Grapple Two Elevators Together: Bummer.

The Malaysian Faction Boss Is Annoying: I might catch heat from both feminists and Malaysian people when I say that I can't stand the Malaysian faction boss lady. But seriously, she's irritating – especially when she's constantly yelling at you during a mission in heavily accented English.

What Should Stay The Same?
I Want To Have The Grapple's Babies: It is so fun to grapple onto things, grapple things together or just grapple yourself to the ground then deploy the parachute while you're being pulled toward said grapple point to launch yourself into the air for what's basically the Spider-Man mode of transportation. The best part of the demo was when the developer grappled a truck that was pursuing him to the underside of a bridge as they passed by. The physics of watching the wire snap taut and the truck flip up and over were hilarious. Also, you can grapple cars and boats to helicopters. Oh, and you can keep your airborne momentum up when you're parachuting by grappling onto distant points on the ground or environment.

I Might Cheat On The Grapple With The Parachute: You can deploy your parachute at any time, pretty much anywhere if you've got even a few feet of air between your feet and the ground. A single button press deploys it and releases it, which is very low-fuss given all the guns you've got to handle. Once you master the pitch (point up, not down and you'll gain altitude!) and the grappling-to-the-ground technique, you might even forget to hijack cars.

We Could Have A Threesome With The Stunt Driving: Car chases are infinitely more fun when you're not actually driving. It's way better instead to let the car's momentum do the work while you straddle the front of the car as cover and shoot at the dudes climbing onto the back of your car, trying to kill you.

Final Thoughts
Just Cause 2 is pretty and violent and expansive – just like sandbox third person shooter/action games ought to be. It's really the grapple combined with the parachute that sets this game apart from, say, Mercenaries 2 or Saints Row 2.

Also, it occurs to me that if the game really went for realism with the parachute/grappling thing, discarded parachutes and wires would be littered all over Panau by the end of the game. Also, Rico would be covered in vomit.

Call of Duty:Modern Warfare 2 Review:Woot War !!

Sergeant Gary "Roach" Sanderson answers the call of duty in the highly charged Modern Warfare 2, developer Infinity Ward's immediate successor to Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare.

Modern Warfare 2's single-player campaign picks up five years after the events of the previous game, telling the bloody story of a new conflict between multinational military squad Task Force 141 and Russian Ultranationalists under the leadership of terrorist Vladimir Makarov. It's a relatively short ride, a package fleshed out by the longer-term draw of Modern Warfare 2's expansive—and destined for popularity—multiplayer suite as well as the cooperative two-player Spec Ops mission mode.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 has been billed as the "most anticipated game of the year" by its publisher. The PC, PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 game has been pegged as the year's biggest, bestselling blockbuster by analysts. But is the game good? And is it a worthy successor to the multi-million selling Call of Duty 4?

A Thrilling Single-player Campaign: Like Infinity Ward's previous Call of Duty, Modern Warfare 2 is an explosive roller coaster ride of an action game. It peaks with frenetic chases and bottoms out with slow, steady sniper mission and, with a campaign length on par with Call of Duty 4, never overstays its welcome. On my first playthrough on Hardened difficulty—one notch higher than standard challenge—it took me just over 7 hours to complete. That may be brief in comparison to Modern Warfare 2's peers, but the pacing is tight, with regular doses of hyper-violent spectacle. That said, the single-player campaign has its faults, mostly from a storytelling perspective.

Awesome Presentation: Modern Warfare 2's globe-spanning adventure features some awesome sights and sounds. From the game's amazing voice over work to its booming audio to its well-designed set pieces, the game's single-player levels—and the multiplayer maps built upon their foundation—feature impressive attention to detail. Levels set in the exotic favelas of Brazil and in familiar suburban streets present the player with locations they've likely never done battle in, a fine contrast to the bleak and barren environments of Afghanistan and Kazakhstan. The game doesn't waste much time expounding upon plot or reason, mostly barking orders at the player between missions as intel swoops by on a mostly black screen. It just does it with top notch voice talent. Character modeling has made an impressive leap, with character faces now having... character.

Spec Ops: If you're not quite ready to venture into the foulmouthed multiplayer noob-slaying frenzy that is Modern Warfare 2's multiplayer mode, the cooperative multiplayer Spec Ops mode offers a stellar two-player experience. Most missions can be played solo—not that you'd really want to—but a few require a buddy. And they're the best of the lot, putting one on the ground, the other in hovering aircraft—an AC-130 in one, an attack helicopter in the other—raining down gunfire upon swarms of computer-controlled foes as the ground-based player works his way across a map. Some of the later Spec Ops challenges can be painfully hard, particularly on Hardened or Veteran difficulty, but most of the challenges are a treat to play with a friend.

A Massive Multiplayer Buffet: Fourteen multiplayer modes may sounds like option overkill, but most of Modern Warfare 2's game types are variations on the familiar, including Capture The Flag, Team Deathmatch, the bomb-planting/bomb-defusing Demolition and the base-capturing Domination. The most enjoyable of these modes, personally, was the Headquarters Pro mode, which spawns capture points throughout the round, targets that teams must hold and defend. It's a mode that requires, for better or worse, active communication among teammates, making for a thrilling and sometimes frustrating experience. Layered on top of the broad game type offering are 16 multiplayer maps, dozens of unlockable weapons and attachments, per-weapon, per-perk and per-item Challenges (that will take dozens of hours to fully complete) and a level progression system that's incredibly addictive.

Streaks & Perks 2.0: Adding to the variety of Modern Warfare 2's multiplayer are expanded attribute enhancing Perks, which can be unlocked as players progress and the second-tier "Pro" versions of Perks that make players even better. For example, the Sleight Of Hand Perk, which lets players reload quicker, adds the ability to aim faster via scope or sight with Sleight Of Hand Pro. Also expanded are the rewards players can deploy from racking up kill streaks, which included UAV radar detectors, counter-UAV radar jammers and randomized, air-dropped care packages. At the higher, more ridiculous end of the kill streak reward scale are EMP blasts, stealth bomber strikes and game-ending tactical nukes. New to Modern Warfare are death streaks, which give players on the losing side an opportunity to level the playing field. Player-created custom classes let players define almost everything about their online personality and play style, letting you choose which perks, streaks, weapons, and equipment suit you best.

Its Zimmerific: It's not often that I'll take notice of a game's musical score to the point where it sticks with me, where upon revisiting a level I relish the musical accompaniment as I did with Modern Warfare 2. Beyond the pumped up fanfare, the game's soundtrack ranges from a brooding, disturbing drone to a sweet, somber ballad, the drama solidified by the musical efforts of Hans Zimmer and Infinity Ward's audio team.

Host Migration Is One Thing: Modern Warfare 2 brings with it a strong multiplayer backbone—at least on the console side—featuring ample game set up options and speedy entry into populated games. But it's the multiplayer mode's host migration that saves the game, keeping multiplayer matches going when a host bails. In our experience with host migration, upon losing a multiplayer match host, we were back into the action within seconds, not dumped into a lobby from which everyone quits. From our real-world experience, games have been mostly lag-free affairs, though some experiences were unmistakably spotty.

What Just Happened? Brush up on your Call of Duty 4 single-player if you care about the story-driven events of the sequel, because the delivery of Modern Warfare 2's plot assumes you know it well. The game's single-player campaign can be scattershot and confusing, mostly as a result of the game's hastily delivered orders via intermission and comm transmissions. At the end of the campaign, I was left wondering what the hell just went down and how the key players in Modern Warfare 2 got wrapped up in this conflict. The game's campaign mode also suffers from treading on territory that feels familiar to the first, with some storytelling tricks feeling recycled or just plain overdone. Just how many times can we sprint to an escape helicopter anyway?

Makarov: Modern Warfare 2's antagonist Vladimir Makarov puts the player in a very uncomfortable, disturbingly violent situation that may offend or upset some players—probably a very tiny fraction of the blood-lustful Call of Duty playing population. This can be skipped from the get-go without punishing the player, but... who's going to do that? While in context the level that made me hate Makarov helps to justify the events of the game, it doesn't make it enjoyable.

Abandon All Hope Ye Noobs: Call of Duty fans new to the multiplayer landscape of Modern Warfare 2 may want to find some skilled, friendly teammates to play with. Public multiplayer matches can be a bloodbath for the low-ranking noob, a frustrating, sharp learning curve that's made more punishing by some of the game's killstreak rewards and higher-level unlocks. Spending much of a round being liquefied by AC-130 rounds, Predator missiles or Pave Low fire from above is not uncommon, something that may sour one's enjoyment while playing online. Players may be rightfully concerned about the balance of the game's killstreaks, which, if you're not well-versed in Modern Warfare multiplayer, can be intimidating. Fortunately, options for setting up private matches that disable killstreaks and perks, are easy to access. New users may find it similarly frustrating to not have total access to all of the game's multiplayer modes from the get-go.

Modern Warfare 2's single-player storyline doesn't deliver the same highly charged thrill of its predecessor, despite offering memorable cinematic moments and a massive spike in collateral damage. But Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare was a tough act to follow, an uncommonly taut campaign delivered in less time and with a then-fresher modern coat of paint. The variety of environments in which one plays through Modern Warfare 2's campaign adds wondrous distinction to the game, even if some of the series' previous stand out storytelling tricks feel more like Modern Warfare tropes.

Fortunately, Infinity Ward has expanded impressively on the game's multiplayer components. Competitive multiplayer is flooded with content, a deep collection of well-crafted modes, maps and unlockable goods that will likely keep players committed to Modern Warfare 2 online well into level 70 and beyond. Spec Ops mode offers an outstanding bite-sized mix of mission-based levels and two-person multiplayer, a cooperative mode that both rewards and challenges. Together, the three pillars of Modern Warfare 2's package make for an impressive experience.

Modern Warfare 2 may not innovate or raise the bar as impressively as Call of Duty 4 did in order to grant it automatic game of the year consideration. The better praise it may deserve is that it's likely the game that many will be playing well into next year.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 was developed by Infinity Ward and published by Activision for the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and PC on November 10. Retails for $59.99 USD. A copy of the game was given to us by the publisher for reviewing purposes. Played through single-player campaign on Hardened difficulty, through 80% of Spec Ops cooperative mode and tested multiple online game types on Xbox 360 at an Activision sponsored event over the course of two days. Additional time was spent with a retail copy of the title at home, dedicating additional time to the game's online mode.

Lost Network ? No Worries : New Wi-Fi Direct will let you talk one-on-one without network.

SEATTLE - Starting in mid-2010, new versions of gadgets like cameras, cell phones and computers will be able to talk to each other using Wi-Fi without needing to connect to a wireless network first.

The Wi-Fi Alliance, an industry group, said Wednesday it is nearly finished putting together a Wi-Fi Direct specification, a set of technical “rules” that guide consumer electronics companies that plan to add the new capability.

Kelly Davis-Felner, the Wi-Fi Alliance’s marketing director, said Wi-Fi Direct will make it easier to liberate the mounting gigabytes of digital family photos that are trapped in cameras, smart phones or PCs. Now those gadgets will be able to connect directly to digital photo frames, TVs or printers.

In creating the specification, the Alliance is moving into the territory of Bluetooth, a competing wireless technology that already handles direct gadget-to-gadget connections. Bluetooth uses less power but has much shorter range and a lower transfer speed. To tackle the latter problem, the industry group behind Bluetooth announced last year that it would co-opt Wi-Fi technology to make it possible to send videos and other bandwidth-hogging files around the house, much as Wi-Fi Direct promises to do.

Only one of the gadgets need have the new Wi-Fi Direct technology to make a two-way connection work. In one scenario, you could connect a smart phone with Wi-Fi Direct to a laptop and piggyback on its wired Internet connection for a quick e-mail check without tapping your phone’s data plan.

Yes, Blu-ray is a big aspect of what makes the PS3 appealing. But for gamers, is that a huge selling point? As for Wi-Fi, well, that depends on your setup. Most gamers who are serious about playing online probably would rather plug their console right into their router. And Bluetooth? Who gives a shit about Bluetooth?

To be fair, there are definite advantages to PS3 that make it appear to be a better value. Really want a Blu-ray player? Home theater setup too far away from your router to plug the console right in? Turned off by an annual charge for online services? The PS3 is right up your alley.

But for many people who are interested in serious gaming consoles, what matters most is software, not hardware. And the Xbox 360 arguably has the best games library and the best online service. And for me at least, that makes up for Bluetooth and Wi-Fi about 50 times over, which is why I would personally recommend the Xbox 360 to a friend over the PS3. But despite that fact, the decision as to what console to buy has never been harder.
Aw, what the hell. Just buy both.
